^ haha, awesome description under your avatar, dave

i like my legra, it's excellent. i also tried a tele made by a guy over here, which was very nice, but i've only seen two of his guitars, and both were teles... i like teles, but not enough to pay the kind of money needed for a custom-made one.

haven't tried any of the others, unfortunately. :(

A: As someone who has over 60 guitars,

B: I would never limit myself to one brand and the same is true for custom makers.

C: What I can say is that going to a custom builder will get you something that you can't get off the shelf and if you have some experience of playing and know what you want, then a custom guitar will really get you that extra that you are looking for.

A: I dont think my house has space for 60 guitars! Oh, I'd certainly TRY to get them in, but I wouldnt be able to move around!

B: This is a tricky. Custom stuff is by definition sight-unseen. You dont really know what youre going to get till its in your hands. Could be a Legra or Wez or Feline, could be an Ed Roman, or even Eric Devries. I'm gonna call it "Rhythm in Jump. Dancing Close to You" syndrome. You may not get quite what you planned for!

Without vast amounts of spare cash around a custom is a bit of a risk. Some of us are lucky enough to be able to afford to take chances with new builders, some cant. Plus, regardless of the financial outlay, we'd all love to try new builders with every giutar, but theres a matter of trust and knowing what youre going to get, both in quality and in how well it achieves what you set out to do with it.

For me getting my first custom was a decision that I very carefully went into, and I very carefully selected who would build it. I now know that I made good choices then, but I dont know that I'd make as good a choice with the second one. Perhaps yes, perhaps no. The only way I think you can know is to play one of their guitars, and by the nature of the beast, thats very hard to do (and even then, that doesnt mean that they're going to be able to achieve what you want with your particular guitar).

I have few biasses with produciton stuff - I just buy guitars I like. Its easy, cos you can try them out. Some manufacturers are...how shall we say, more likely to make a good guitar than others, but its possible, in theory at least, to get a good guitar from almost any of them. Because with custom you dont get to try them, I'm personally much more cautious.

C: Yep. Thats pretty much it - havent found what youre looking for in produciton stuff? Have a good idea of what you want and a good idea of what affects a guitars performance? Go custom.

You guys have some awesome sites and guitars. I'd really like to get a custom in the next decade but it would be difficult to find ones to play without travel.

I've only tried a Feline, a Blackmachine and Tims custom Les Paul (Foster?) with the Miracle Man. They are great and once you feel that sort of quality, you don't forget it. Seeing the prices of named model guitars and custom shop then its cheaper to go with the builders like Feline. Steve Jones (The Sex Pistols) Custom Les Paul (the one he robbed) 3.2 grand? Jeff Beck Les Paul, 11 grand? Bollocks to that!

Custom guitars you say?

I'm familiar with most "custom makers" as I spent countless hours searching before finally deciding on one to work with, but let me toss out some interesting ones-

Hmmm......

Mansons http://www.mansons.co.uk
Feline http://www.felineguitars.com
BlackMachine www.blackmachine.net]http://]www.blackmachine.net
Legra http://www.legraguitars.co.uk
DeTemple http://www.detempleguitars.com/

all of which are top draw, Legra is my personal favorite though :) (the only one I've bought a guitar from now that I think about it!) I know there are one or two other luthiers in this forum but I'm not so sure of their websites :(

Mansons built the infamous Mattocasters-

BlackMachine makes these shred beasties-

Feline can get pretty cool-

and Legra can build anything-!

and DeTemple doesn't want you taking pics of their website....sooo...just pretend its beautiful

Those DeTemple ones  are interesting.  Look very nice, but it did make me wonder what i could charge if i was 40 years older.   Maybe i should be wondering what i will be able to charge in 40 years ;)

DeTemple isn't that hard to work around... Attached is one nice looking tele (Roo can $%&# right off)

Personally i don't care too much for custom guitars. I'm a simple man of simple tastes. Though I love the natural stuff Wez does (that beastly strat thing with MMs) and the Feline Lions. One day would love a flat top lion jr, but for now i'm happy with my off the peg guitars.

The leopard print Jackson modified on the feline guitars site looks cool and good value but there are no details about it only a picture.

I think I have a friend that would want the tweaked SG !!!

If my wife keeps up playing I think I will treat her to a feline -- just the name alone would have her sold on one!

I don't have a custom, but I think if I were going to get one it would be a BlackMachine, WezV or Feline.
(Stock forumite choices I know, but for good reason!)

For me it would have to be a Feline or a Wez. Having met both I would feel very comfortable with either building me a guitar.
I think I hate being indecisive.
