RY Trouble

so maybe im having an off day with my guitar...

tonight tried playing my LTD with MM set through my JCM 800. it sounded a bit weak i turned the amp up and had a harder go at it. It sounded fine, i switched guitars to my les paul custom with RY set and the bass felt open, les defined than the MM LTD and the harsh where a touch harsh. Maybe its just my ears tonight.

Anyway, any suggestions? pickup height adjustment on the RY's? or maybe even some new pups. i tried the MM in the bridge on my les paul a while ago but it was too bass heavy for me. my les paul used to have Emeralds, but i wanted something higher output.

anyway, maybe i just need to go back and fiddle. wondered what peoples thought's or suggestions would be.

...maybe ear fatigue-after a time with the mm's, maybe this occurred...take a break, relax, put new strings on your ry axe, and I bet new ears will yield new results...!

I had rebell yells in at least four different guitars (the same set) including a  LP custom (no maple cap) a standard, A Superstrat and a tele.

To be honest, i think they are one of those pickups that polarises people.  For me i could'nt get on with them, more so than any other of the BK range.

My advice would be to get your self a cold sweat bridge, it truly rocks, and is surpringly versatile for a ceramic; it'l certainly sort the bass out :P

so do you think the RY lacks some bass (compared to the CS) ?

it is explained that the RY was developped on the "old" Ceramic version of the HD. I didn't expect it to have less bass than the CS, pretty interesting.

It kind of sat too close to the Rebel Yell in the range once the RY was developed

Not developed on, sat quite close to in the sound. I would have thought that the CS would have... a ceramic bass sound. Tight and the ability to become huge when dialed in
I believe the RY has one vintage coil and one contemporary, from Steve Stevens interviews, something I don't think is in the CS design

The Rebel Yell is a funny one. I played it in a V and thought it sounded stiff, but in a LP quite liked it

i aint got around to playing about with it more.
I know that Les Paul + Mesa Dual Rec + EL34's + JJ's average gain preamp tubes sounds very nice for me.

I went for Rebel Yells when Tim suggested to me that they are voiced similar to the emeralds i used to have, but they have the extra power i was looking for.

when i got bummed out using them i was playing through my jcm 800 2205. the MM loaded LTD has more bite, the pickups are higher set than the RY's in the les paul. which makes me wondered about experimenting with pup height.

I don't tend to use my jcm live, i use my dual rec.

I'm going to play about tuesday night, my soldano comes tomorrow too! so its the perfect chance to get stuck in to some tweaking.

I dont want pups which are too bass heavy for my les paul, because the les paul is bass heavy enough as it is. i find with the MM's in it, it just produces a serious amount of low end, which isn't really to my taste.

I'm also thinking about speakers now too. reading up a lot.
does anyone have experience with scumback, eminence, jenson etc??? i got recommended Vintage 30's to go in my 4x12. But im wondering if something else might be a bit more interesting

I run through Vintage 30s and it's a very warm overdriven roar. I'm not totally sure it's what you're after, though.

Without taking this too off topic: Scumbacks are amazing if you are after a vintage sound, meaning anything from late 60s to early 80s.

im got some vintage 30;s coming tomorrow. so im gonna have some experimentation time.
i thought V30's would be easy to shift if i didn't like em, and trying em in 1960A cabs means i can try Just the v30's using a stereo input and then change up the pattern to an X with the G12T's.

im going to start watching ebay and looking out for speakers that might be cool.

back to THIS topic. i just played les paul through the soldano and i tinkered with the pup height. im much happier now. the ltd is lighter and sounds more 'modern' with the miracle mans. but the les paul custom with Rebel Yells is more creamy and the sound is like a fine wine, rather than a young upstart!

glad you're happy now :D

but I recommend you try boosting the amps too (with an overdrive or an equalizer)
just a slight output boost, not dirty boosting
if they get muddy, just turn some gain down on the amps
makes the whole difference in both JCM 800 and Soldano
they just sound bigger, more articulated and alive
the recto can be very benefited too, but it's no near as sensitive to boosting as the SLO and JCM

about the speakers, I hated the Recto I had with everything, except greenbacks
the greenbacks seemed to tame the boomy bass and did a great job cleaning that midrange fuzz and smoothing the highs a bit
