Egnater rebel alert
« on: March 31, 2009, 03:57:11 AM »
Ok I went into a music store today, and tried out a couple of things. I had always wanted to play an Egnater Rebel because I was told that it was better than my Orange TT. Here is my review as I see it

It has a tube mix knob where you could blend or focus more on the EL84 or the 6v6 tubes. I thought that this was interesting. There was more gain on tap than on the TT, and there are treble mids and bass knobs. My reaction was surprise. The thing sounded cheap. I messed with the cleans and I messed with the gain and tried to eq it a bit, but it almost sounded like a SS amp rather than tube. It lacks that transparency in the cleans, and that nice sizzle in the overdrive that the Orange has. I think people can be more attracted to the Egnater because it appears to be more versitile, but who wants an amp that sounds cheap right. Anyway that was my reaction from it, and you guys can go ahead and shoot it up if you want. Just figured that there is a lot of talk about little amp heads so I would add this in there.

Interesting. Some YouTube vids sounded rather nice, though. :?Some people 're saying the EL84/6V6 knob is more like a gimmick.I did like the overdrived sound in some Egnater but it's difficult to judge on YouTube..I  tried the TT once but it was with a cheap Epiphone and i was not convinced.

I think the Egnater Rebel has more of a special voice, which is not a bad thing. But as an overall rock allrounder, the TT is better as far as my taste. Also I find that the TT actually doesn't sound like an EL84 amp, but more like EL34 or 6550, it sounds bigger than it is, whereas the Rebel is small and sounds like it - but the Rebel is great for breakup stuff if you turn it up.
