Not been a great year but now i'm scared
« on: April 01, 2009, 02:25:30 AM »

**bugger meant to put this in the dressing room not time out sorry**

I have been having problems with my right ear for while now constantly getting infections and my hearing steadly getting worse and worse till at present I have very little hearing at all in my right ear.

I have finally been given the reason why, I have a type of benign tumor in my middle ear which is stopping the ear drum and little bones conducting the sound. The tumor also destroys the bones in the middle ear.

The only way to sort it out is to remove it... this is the bit that is scaring me, I am absolutely bricking it. :(

To do this they drill a big hole though my skull into my middle ear and scoop every thing out. They are going to do this next Monday

I have been given only 50/50 of regaining my hearing from this operation, might need to let them do the same thing in a years time after they are sure it's not come back to replace the little bones with plastic ones.

To make matters worse I was meant to be leaving the country in two weeks time to go traveling for a year+ with my redundancy money and have therefore moved out of my flat. I have been told that I would not be able to fly for a least 2 months after the operation and that it would be a very bad idea to try and leave it till after I get back due to the likelyhood of the following, deafness, facial paralysis, abscess on the brain and of course death (which happens to be the same as the possible side effects of the operation)

One thing is making me laugh though:lol:, I was made redundant at the end of Feb but technically i am still employed and on gardening leave so the company medical cover is still in place therefore they are going to pay the 10k+ it is going to cost to go private so I don't have to wait to get it done.

So to sum up I have no job, no home, and they want to drill a hole in my head and they are telling me its for the best.

On the plus side, I don't have to go to work, I'm going to live for free at my parents while I recover, and build a new guitar while I recover.

:o

Sorry to hear it! Hope the surgery goes fine and you recover well!
Think you should think about building guitars from scratch after the 2 months, perhaps even more time... I would be afraid of the wood dust and the high volume buzz from the machinary...

I really hope it goes well for you, and keep us posted! I'd be bricking it as well, that is some scary ****.

Result on the medical insurance though, some good news at least.

Good luck!

yes, best of luck, and fingers crossed your hearing improves.

obviously these kind of things mess up plans, but things will happen that wouldn't have happened otherwise, you may end up being glad you had to wait to travel.

and that is good luck with the insurance!

hope it all goes well

That is nasty. If it's any comfort/reassurance to you my Mum had something very similar to this about 20 years ago. She recovered from it and is now absolutely fine many years later - she did lose her hearing in one ear though but that was mainly due to the length of time it took to diagnose the problem - I think it was a couple of years until it was diagnosed properly.

What can you can be sure of is that the surgeon you have will be top quality and the care you receive after the op will be very good as well.

All the best and I really hope it goes well for you.

Ian.
I think I hate being indecisive.

I understand your worries, I'd  feel awful and scared in your situation but your health is the most important thing.
I presume you're getting it done by someone who knows what they're doing so as scary as it sounds to you try to remember you're in the hands of experts. Of course they have to tell you the worst case scenario, it's their obligation to do so.
I'm sure you'll be fine just take it easy and think how much better it will be when it's all over :)

it's natural to be worried but you're insafe hands - it'll all be cool, you'll see.
