Which cab for a Laney VH100R? Laney cab, or something else?
« on: April 03, 2009, 02:30:25 PM »
I've got a Laney VH100R, and at the moment, a Marshall JCM900 1936 2x12. I don't like the cab too much. It's hard to get a decent sound out of it. I'm after a cab that will go very well with the tone of my amp. I played through a Matamp with Hot 100's a month or so ago, in Sheffield. It sounded really good!

But does anyone recommend anything else?

I was just going to not recommend the 1936... I had a VH100R, and paired it with a 1936, and it sounded horrible- i'd stay away from the G12T75 speakers in there. My experience was that the VH100R had a quite pronounced high end, which needed taming somewhat. I haven't tried a Laney cab, but i'd imagine that it'd be better suited than the Marshalls.

Roo + speaker thread = G12K-100!

But seriously, it has a very well balanced sound, and handles mids, low mids and bass particularly well.

You didn't mention what sort of tone you're using. What sort of music are you playing?

Well, my band: www.myspace.com/tacomanarrowsbridgedisaster

"Sunday" is most representative of the sort of thing I'm going for. Although that song was not done with the VH100R, it gives you an idea though.

This is with my Nailbomb packed Les Paul, VH100R, and the 1936 cab. This is roughly the sort of tone I want. Also; I'm after a 2x12, not a 4x12.

Any opinions would be great :)

G12H30s sound good with Laneys imo. Use a 2x12 of them with my GH50L and it sounds really good to me. Would like to try something else though, hot100s or g12h30/v30 mix is always tempting.

'Sunday' is a wicked tune, really sounds like something I'd do. Keep it up.

Thankyou :)

If you know anywhere near you where we could get some gigs, please do get in touch. We're quite eager to gig more outside London, as London tends to be a little um.... shall we say biased towards indie ;)

I'm from stoke and it's full of metal venues, which are generally full of generic metalcore bands so it'd be nice to see something decent around here.
These are the main metal/rock venues around the area:

For a decent 2x12 a a reasonable price, there's the Orange 2x12 - but only if you like V30's (as it all become rather expensive once you start  buying new speakers as well). If you have a greater budget than the Orange then there are a number of boutique cabs you coulds look at. For example, the Bogners are supposedly outstanding.

The new(ish) Laney GS212ie is a great, solid cab (and amazingly cheap). It's a good size too, with plenty of depth. However, the speakers (70/80's) are IMHO really quite unpleasant, and very much on the bright side.
A good option could be to get the Laney cab (about £185) and then get a couple of G12K-100's to go in it. I second Roo in saying that they are great speakers for what you are probably looking for. They also have high power ratings, which is essential for playing a 100W amp through a 2x12.

The other option to investigate might be to have a chat with MartinW from Martamp (MJW amps). His cabs are excellently made and reasonably priced. However, I suspect you would do better with a fully closed back cab and I'm not sure what he's offering in that way at the moment in a 2x12.

Budget isn't a problem really. I work, have relatively little outgoing, so I can afford to spend most of my money on gear.

When we did our gig in Sheffield a while back, I used my Laney into a Matamp 2x12, straight cab. I think it was loaded with Hot100's, and it sounded fantastic. I've not heard the G12K-100's, are there any recordings around with them in use?

Don't have much to say except - Orange with G12K-100s like I say in every new cab thread. It really is the way to go imo.

However, what I posted was to say - I love your band. Please release an EP or something, completely my kind of thing. Me lovey ambient instrumental music.
