Pickups for a Yamaha Pacifica 112
« on: April 06, 2009, 09:44:32 AM »
I just bought and old used Pacifica 112 and I'm going to give it a make over. I want it to be a sweet sounding guitar suited for 60's rock and blues. I'm thinking of getting the Stormy Monday/Apache HSS-set. Would this be the right combination or should I go for something else?

If anyone have some great advice or ideas for the make over please share them with me.

I'd perhap's go with a mule and IT's for a bit extra muscle and bite.

Did you see the 'pimp my pacifica' article in guitarist a while back?  That would give you a few ideas....

I haven't seen the "Pimp my Pacifica" article, but I would love to. I'll see if I can dig it up somewhere.

The idea of a Mule and IT's aren't that bad. Still something tells me that the Stormy/Apache combo will give me the most vintage sound and that's what I'm after. But I've known to be wrong before (on very rare occations
 )

The thing is that you have to choose first between getting an A2 or an A4 magnet...

I remember Tim saying those exact words somewhere on this place :
« Alnico II is the softest and generally has a smooth bass and treble although this is more pronounced the hotter the windings get .... Alnico IV is probably the best vintage tone IMHO and along with II and III was used in the earliest PAFs-this is a fact and not myth as we've had them analyzed and a colleague of mine has also seen original Gibson purchase orders that clearly state AIV bar stock being purchased. The tone of AIV is balanced and extremely organic, it produces the most authentic vintage tone and sits better in slightly hotter vintage winds than AII which tends to get very mushy if used incorrectly. »  8) 8) 8)

My advice would be to go with a Mule humbucker...and maybe something smoother or less edgy than the IT for the coils if you wish...don't know which one... Slowhand...or the Apache might work too...?

I would love to read that article if anyone can find it. I've had a search but came up only with people talking about it rather than the article itself.

Sounds awesome that you'll scan the "pimp my pacifica" article, PhillyQ. Will you be posting it here at the forum?

I'll have to scan it at work, so it'll be a pdf.

I think I can attach that to a post in a thread, but if it doesn't work I can email it to anyone who wants it.

OK, sorry it's taken a few days, but here's the article.  They even used BKPs on the "Bluesmaster".

Anyone who wants it emailed, PM me!  :)

I thought it was wicked too - but in the reader's letters pages of the next issue there were people complaining about it! :O

Have you met people?

I find myself mostly disappointed.

Yeah, "people" do tend to be disappointing.  I'm sure they say the same about me.

It is a great article, isn't it?  They cover a lot of good stuff in just a few pages, like rolling fingerboard edges, replacing modern tuners with vintage ones, relicing, setting guitars on fire....
