WOW
« on: April 09, 2009, 10:06:54 PM »
I saw Exodus live last night, and they were just BEYOND cool......my neck hurts like hell and i lost some of my voice! lol.......one thing that struck that hell out of me was Gary Holts Guitar tone, it was just incredible and clear, i think he uses SH-5's. Now that just made me wanna chage the bridge pup of my guitar i use for metal, its a VERY light mahogany guitar with a maple top and ebony fingerboard, a washburn boogie street instigator. I was wondering what pups would get me a similar incredibly clear yet crunchy thrash tone like that. Miracle Mans? painkillers?

thanks

I say cold sweat cos theres an odd high end to exodus' rhythm sound that I recon, from my brief time with it, it matches quite well.

Maybe not compressed enough though. But then the only Bk that matches the compression I hear in that sound is the C-Pig. You certainly woundnt get a million miles from it with one, depends what the guitar sounds like. If its a bright guitar, the pig would work well, if its a more ballanced guitar, the PK, and the CS is the outside choice.

cold sweat + peavey for the last two albums tones
their live triple xxx tone is awesome
I think it's my second favorite recent crunchy tight picking metal tone (jon schaffer kicks more ass  :D)
for tempo of the damned era tones, I'd say painkiller or miracle man + some marshall based amp

and the sh-5 is the best duncan model, imo (sorry, Antag )

thankss, i dont think its necessarily bright since its got a mahogany body and neck, its just the weight is low and its got a maple cap and ebony fingerboard, so its probably a little brighter than conventional mahogany guitars, lighter than my SG i think though its got a bigger body. The pickups it has are made for thrash (scott Ian pickup) but theres something about it thats missing.

On paper that sounds, broadly speaking, balanced. Would you agree?

I'm sure Darth Hellstyles recommendation is a good one in this but I cant wholeheartedly endorse it due to the very different setup of the guitar I heard the CS in compared to how I have or have had all my BKs (10s in E Vs various degrees of detuning and much heavier srings). Painkiller is the best I can say.

Unless anything more specific about the "something thats missing" you can offer changes my mind...

gwem's marshall preamp is on ebay for like a few dimes

never played that 9001 model, but my peavey rockmaster and the marshall jmp-1 definitely can get close with a booster to enhance the picking response (holt uses a parametric presonus EQ before the amp)
