is this singing decent? ( U2-content, don't be a hater! )
« on: April 18, 2009, 04:46:56 AM »
Well gotta figure,

I recorded myself singing along while playing around with my Boss loop station  and though I'm happy its not as bad as I thought it'd be I'm trying to put it into perspective. I  am not cut out to be a vocalist but do you think this is decent enough for a someone who's playing with a guitar?

and this feels sorta embarrassing and its a short clip of a U2 song so don't be hater cause I know the bkp forum is for mostly more aggressive types of music  i apologize for the shite quality it was recorded with a cheap cam in my garage electric fan and all in the background

(which is why i posted this in the least popular bkp forum  :? )

SOunds pretty good to me, although nothing like Bono. You don't have the "rocky" growl that Bono can do.

You have a very "nice", poppy type of voice. Good vibrato and in tune.  Reminded me of the chap from the Boo Radleys.  WOuld suit poppy, indie-type stuff very well.

Sounds pretty good to me to. You have the makings of a very commercial sounding voice and I mean that in a good way-i.e that you could cover a lot of ground. It is one of those things that gets better the more you do it. I can imagine you doing Neil Finn/Crowded House songs or maybe Squeeze-nice melodic stuff I mean.

You got a good voice :D

On the clip it sounds like you're using your "head voice" - we have "head voices" and "chest voices". The head voice is what we use to sing falsetto and soft passages (or just quietly so as not to annoy the neighbours!). The chest voice uses our full lung capacity.

You only get "full" power when you fill your lungs, open your throat and "sing from your chest". As you get more practised, you can get more power into your head voice when you need, and also increase the range over which the two voices merge.

When you first start experimenting with full lungs and the chest voice, you'll think "but I don't want to sing opera!!" - don't worry, once you've learnt to control the column of air (and make sure it's always there) you can sing whatever style you want with damaging your voice.

Full lungs = lots of breathe = confidence = in tune = better control = happy singer/audience

Like Hamfist says: you've got a good vibrato and in tune - that's well over half the battle, it means you've got a "good ear" already. You've also got pretty good phrasing (rhythm of the words, pauses) - that's very good, it's what makes people "singers" that we're prepared to listen to.

If you want the rocky growl, you'll be able to do develop it - but you need to use your chest voice (which you might find a bit intimidating because everyone will hear it in the next street ). And don't push it too soon, just let it develop naturally. Bono didn't have it early on, no one does, it's something you develop from having to sing loud over a band.

Keep at it :D

EDIT: 38th has posted while I was writing - I agree with him. With the basic voice you have - you can almost go whichever direction you want.... unless you have the problem I had when I was young: I wanted to be Janis Joplin or Elkie Brooks - but I'm a boy :(

An unusual problem.

well thanks for the honest opinions....

i'm heard somewhere that most people don't know what they actually sound like until they hear themselves in a recording as the voice we hear of ourselves is going through our skull....so I recorded myself once was so mortified I never bothered again lol (well that and someone in church telling me I sound weird)

Thank you AndyR for your info on chest and head voice, I definitely have a gauge of what your talking about, trying to push a more "manly" sound from the chest is a different approach...err louder approach.
Unfortunately everything musically in my living conditions has to be of low volume "no one wants to hear that turn it down!" and i've gotten so used to singing I guess soft "head" voice using chest voice seems really difficult for me, but I'll definitely try to keep all your advice in mind.

i was just hoping to gauge if it was maybe worth going for singing lessons or not, cause that clip was the best I could do with my voice all warmed at the moment(I can't imagine singing cold!) I do notice that while singing along to Foo Fighters I was like "i just don't sound right for this sort of thing."

Well like I said-you have the makings of a great singing voice and lessons certainly would help with technique. I have been singing in bands for years and wish I'd learned the proper way years back-not that my technique is much cop. Keep at it and you'll find that it is a very useful skill.
