New Amp
« on: April 21, 2009, 11:45:35 AM »
On Friday i got my brand spankin new, super lovely Bogner Alchemist 112 and may i just say... its fricken amazing.
I spent some time playing it in the shop a couple of days before and totally fell in love with it.  The range of tones available are quite stunning.  Also with the in-built reverb and delays there's a load of fun to be had.
I would highly recommend one of these to anyone any day.
I will edit this post when im not at work with a proper review for you all.

I have to second the alchemist hype. It is the best amp I have heard for its price. I was playing SRVs Little Wing in Guitar center and a couple people stopped by and listened and one dude who was looking at Mesa Boogies started getting into the Bogner

SRV's Little Wing :?  Jimi Hendrix wrote it, Stevie Ray while a great player is still doing a cover.

I think (hope) he meant SRV's take on Little Wing.

I heard only great things about it, congrats!

How is it with more modern/metal styles?

Well having spent alot more time mucking about in general with it and testing it as much as possible i have to say i am even more impressed with it.
I have played all my axes through this now and its lovely.  I have honed in a tone that i really love on the clean channel (especially for the Esprit).
Using the Esprit you can bring out a lovely lush and yet sparkly clean tone.  Add the in built reverb and delay you can get some really spacey sounds.  The boost could do with a slight increase in level for my liking but it does give you enough of a kick for clean noodling.  I have two strats currently.  My little squier sounds like a hot 50's and really does sound great through this amp.  The in between positions especially sound nice.  Very ringy and very clear.  My other Strat is a mutalated mexican (JB in the neck, cool rails in the middle and Kent Armstrong Muthabucker in the Bridge).  It sounds way more modern and alot more agressive.  I can switch between humbucker or single coil with this guitar and i have to say i have been really impressed with how well the amp handles this guitar.  It is extremely hot as you can imagine but yet it doesnt seem too much through the alchi.
I have tried all sorts of tones using the bright and deep switches on this amp.  Currently i have deep engaged and bright off.  All my guitars are really bright enough anyway so engaging the bright switch doesnt really feel necessary.
I will give a more detailed review of the amp with pics and settings when i get an oppertunity.  I just wanted to give you an insight into how good the amp sounds with my guitars so far.

I would especially be interested in how good the drive channel is at low volume.

Any updates on how you guys are getting on with your Alchemists?

I am thinking about getting my paws on one; they are one of the few decent amps available in Ukraine where I live, and about the only non-local decent product which doesn't sell for stupid money. Finally, a lot of the stores here strongly discourage trying out amps. You pay your (steep) markup and you take your chances. Don't like what you bought? Too bad.

The Bogner distributor is an exception to that rule, also Yerasov, which are made in Russia (where things that suck are forbidden by law).

Plus, a local pro metal guitarist played out with one of my s/s/s Strats and made that thing sound insane!

I tested one of these out when I looked for a new amp a few months back.

I used a Gibbo V with it and got quite an amazing range of tones out of it. I almost went for it but prefered the Randall T2 due to how tight the gain was.

If I ever decide to move on from the Randall, I'd probably go for the Alchemist. One of the nicest clean tones I've ever heard (and I've played with Fender's, Mesas, Laneys and Rolands).

I have an Alchemist HD with Matching 2x12, amazing amp, totalled up under £1k, sounds great live for HardRock + Metal and has an awesome clean tone (used a strat with ITs and nailed a glassy mayer-ish sound)

Hunter - the amp is really good at a low volume, would say more but you'd be posting NAD again before the blink of an eye
