Speaker swap - should I, or not?
« on: April 21, 2009, 12:17:39 PM »
I'm running a powerball through an ubercab.

I'm thinking of replacing the G12T-75s with G12K-100s

What would be the effect you would anticipate from this change?

Need it to be heavy as $%&#, very tight, very clear.

Some corner of my head is blaming the G12Ts for some harshness and not being as tight or fat in the mids as it could be.

Ta.

Can you be more specific than 'slay'?

Like, with adjectives and stuff?

You've already done it in your first post:

K100s will be heavier, tighter, clearer, with fatter mids than the G12Ts.

You'll get a bit more low end too (the K100s have HUGE tight low end)

So youre saying my first (badly) educated guess at new speaker to get the sound I want is the best?

This is.....odd. I'm accustomed to the first post suggesting something totally different, and every subesequent one something different again. Its the bare knuckle forum tradition!

I'm tempted to order 2 before anyone else comes along and confuses me.

Believe it or not, yes :)

It's all basically guesswork if you can't actually try these things anyway.  Best you can do it trawl forums for advice, read the specs thoroughly etc.

What I can tell you, based on my own experience is that the K100s sound great in my Engl 4x12...

Did you replace all 4?

MDV, get 2 and replace those in an X-pattern. Then see what you think before getting 4. In my hands, the G12K100s mix really well (although I'm mixing them with EVM12L blacks), and you may be pleasantly surprised by the results. I find it gives a fuller, fatter tone, without loss of articulation and clarity. All good for our sort of stuff ;)

DO IT!

Yes: 2 Classic Lead 80s & 2 K100s

Here is what I posted when I got them, & here is what I posted after I'd had a chance to calm down a little... :)

warning! thread hijack! :)

i've got a peavey 2x12 cab with god-knows-what-but-i-think-celestion speakers. don't ask me what model, please.
in general i always found it very good, very VERY middy and reasonably tight. they move a lot of air, bass sound very good and treble get never too harsh.
so logic would tell me not to change anything.
BUT.
if i had the intention to try the K100s, should i change both?
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

I would find out what the speakers are first. If they are CL80s or Hot100s, I would try just changing one of them first. In fact, if they're Peavey's "Sheffield 1200" speakers, I'd DEFINITELY try mixing one with a G12K-100 (alas I am too lazy to do this myself, now, but then I did spend a fortune on the EVM12Ls, and am totally happy with that cab! :D). However, if you just swapped over both, I am sure you'll have a killer cab anyway :)

Just to confirm what others have said ....

...... changing G12T-75's for K100's will give less bright, harsh treble, and slightly fuller mids.

Might also notice a slightly fuller bass response, although in my experience not a huge amount more, if any.

Oh, and the cleans of the G12K100 are really nice, too :) I find them very 3-dimensional, quite sparkly, and anything but sterile. Under distortion, I love the grind of these speakers.

Pics and clips when you have them, or it didn't happen :)

Cool

Does anyone have any reason that a pair of k100s and a pair of V30s should not be wed in the holy matrimony of the Ubercab? Speak now or forever hold your peace.
