2x12" Cabinet Hunting
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:44:20 PM »
Hey folks, hope you're all OK.

I'm in search for a 2x12" cabinet. I'll use it with my VHT and will play death metal, and sometimes cleans and obviously anything in between but that doesn't matter much. Suggestions for speakers? Personal experiences? Should I mix?

So far I've been website browsing and so far I've found:

£636.16 ----- Bogner 212 Closed Back
£586.26 ----- VHT Fat Bottom 212
£469.00 ----- Hughes and Kettner CC 212
£438.46 ----- Orange PC212
£349.00 ----- Blackstar 2x12

Those are probably the most expensive I'd want to go as high as but then there's custom, i.e. Martin. He gave me a quote of £325 as standard but I'd want to throw in a few custom bits.

I don't want to shell all my money on a cabinet, but I want a reliable bloody awesome one, good enough for a while yet. I'm not experienced much into cabinets so help me out as much as you can for me, please.

Up for hearing any other suggestions, comments, experiences.

Thanks for reading!

2 great cabs on the bay at the moment... a VHT starting at £300 I think and a Cornford at £200.

I'd rank those

Bogner
VHT/Orange
HK
Blackstar

But these things are rather subjective.

Out of all of them I'd probably go custom and get martin to make something as close to the bogner as possible :)

You want as heavy/chunky a cab as you can afford or lift in my experience  :)

For new best value for money, I'd look at:

* Martin @ MJW Amplification
* Orange
* Matamp

I can't see how Bogner/Diezel cabs are any better but they charge a load more!  Orange cabs come with V30s, you can choose what you want with Matamp/MJW plus they can customise the cab if need be.

Used, I'd look at the above and any of the boutique ones if they're cheap....

I'd say definitely NOT the H&K CC212 because it's loaded with Greenbacks - totally unsuitable for DM & only 50 watts (was your VHT a 50 or 100? can't remember)

How about the Engl E212VH?  Built like a tank, but with good sturdy carrying handles, 2x Vintage 30s.  Thomann have them for £510 & there's one in stock at Wembley Guitar Centre for £499
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

Normally I'd go Bogner, cause their cabs are really good. But as you have a VHT, why not get the matching cab? They are high quality and will match the amp?

Well spotted on the HK

Though greenbacks are 25 or 30W arent they?

Edit- yeah, 30W

There isn't a 2x12" cab on eBay, but there is one at Guitarguitar.

However a cab from Martin would be cheaper. £345, specifically with custom tolex and G12T-100s.

Anything else I could ask from him? Grill, piping, wiring?

I still have my Trace Elliot 2x12 for sale - its heavy I can tell you, though I can lift it for short distances.

GuitarGuitar offered me a better price (£620!) on a loaded 4x12 when I asked to order an unloaded one. Could try that? I am very pleased with it

Also have a Martamp, completely different cabs so can't compare.

As usual, I would recommend trying a Sidewinder for metal, and for cleans the cone doesn't vibrate and feck the sound up. Very versatile.
