Making use of an old combo

I've been gassing for a new cab for a while now to go with my TT head. Seeing as the old Marshall MG cab sounds like...well ass really. I also have an old Fender Deluxe Plus 112 from the mid ninties sitting about the house, so i'm thinking it might be an idea to gut it, get a new speaker and use it as a cab, saving me the hassle of getting a new cab when i'm trying to save to do up my Epi Les Paul.



Here it is, next to said Les Paul. Its a fairly big combo, and its opened backed, so may not be prone to boxiness as some 112s are.

I'm thinking of a Celestion G12M Heritage 'Greenback' to go with it.

Has anyone else done anything like this before? Or am i just in a mental minority?

I'd personally skip the G12M in an open-backed cab, it's not the best choice as the bass tends to be loose.

I'd go with a G12H-100, I'm sure they're available for around £40.00 - Twinfan will tell you all about them, he loves those babies.

Of course Twinfan has them!

I did think that may be a problem with Greenbacks. Seeing as Clapton used them with closed back cabs. I'm not really an authority on speakers. If anyone would have any recommendations, feel free!

i just did a similar thing with an old trace eilliot amp box.  i have an amps built in but the speaker is on a jack socket so i can either use the built in amp or i can use my matamp head.

2 amps

1 speaker (tayden from jpfamps)

It seems a good way to solve a problem anyway! Its been on my mind for a while! Is it more of less a switchcraft jack with cables attached?

Sounds like you have a plan  :)

I don't actually have any Hot 100s any more, but they're a great speaker.  The Greenback may work OK, but it depends how closed your can is.  They seem to work better with a more closed cabinet than more open (if that makes sense!).

To be pedantic G12H100 is a very different speaker to a G12T100 ('Hot 100') and is no longer made - the G12K100 is the nearest to it.

The cab is, shall we say, very open! I suppose theres nothing stopping me from just converting it to closed back, i can't imagine theres much to it.

I've been looking at others speakers on Celestions website, and listened to some of their clips. And i think i like the Blue the best, and i know these generally come in open backed cabs (i think?) so i'm leaning towards that. My only concern is that its only rated 15 watts, and the TT is 7/15 watts. Does anyone know of any alternatives to this?

Wez, how is the Tayden speaker?  Not heard much press about them but they look like Celestions built in the UK but at the cost of the Chinese Celestions?
