That statement is just so flawed Jonny, there would be no Les Paul if Gibson hadn't built the great name up.
Yes there are duds, but there are so many different LP sounds through the years, not all Norlins are bad, they are just different sounding due to different construction methods.
I haven't tried many in shops, but there has been only one noticably 'dead' sounding one (a black LPC).
Unless you are pointing out 1)finish flaws 2) bad set up out of the box? 1) don't bother me at all, 2) pay to get it set up, and anyway, thats the shops responsibility, not G's. How can an international company set up a guitar for your humidity?

Anyway.. I think both companies attempts would just feel wrong, I think there is a 72 tele that is remarkably Gibson, and I haven't heard of any big players of them
