I want a warm single coil clean tone but also want to be able to use a humbucker for distortion. Does anyone know any companies? If worse came to worse I could settle for a HSS set up but I don't really want a fender, ibanez, or jackson. I need something that can do drop tunings well. I know this is kind of a stretch but any information would be helpful!

The only one I know of is the ESP MV series guitar. Since you don't want Fender, Ibanez or Jackson.

There was a cheaper model on eBay, I don't know if it either ran out of time or someone bought it. Look out for it on there.

If you can allow Ibanez, you can spend a good few months hunting for an Ibanez RG565.

Or if you want to go Fender, you could just customise a Telecaster for a humbucker/single coil.

Caparison Horuses are HS, and they make HGS models which're specifically designed for detuning, with the bridge slightly repositioned for better intonation in low tunings (though it's a bit of a gimmick). Some of the ESP export models (non-US models like the MV and Forest GT) are HS, as are some of the older M2s (which are also cheaper :)). I'm sure there are loads more options, but those're the ones I have direct experience with.

Which are also extremely expensive you should add.

Yeah, they're not cheap new, but there's always the used market. Some of the older HS M2s don't sell for too much (I got the one I owned, which was a '96ish model for 500aud); and there've been some Horuses going for reasonably cheap in the US. I'm sure there're cheaper HS options, but I don't have experience with them

There's this french company called Vigier that do a few.

I know you don't fancy a Fender, but this is pretty mental

For some reason the HS combo is just my fancy, the Vigier looks nice but I would just feel weird playing Bumblefoot's signature model when Bumblefoot is not my cup of tea, good features though, killswitch and a floyd rose pro   :)

Thanks for the info! I like that Vigier. I checked their site but I can't find where to buy (i live in the US). Also, I can't stand floating tremolo systems, I checked their site and it said for that model it only goes one way. Do you think it's like a Fender tremolo? I don't want a lot of tuning hassles. Thanks!

The Gordon Smith GS1.5.   Just got one myself - awesome guitars  !  If you get a good one, the necks play like silk.  Potentially able to do pretty much any genre, with the right pickups of course.
There has been some question about Gordon Smith's recent quality control not being up to the standard of previous decades, so might be a good idea to play it first.   Used examples are usually a bargain, however, and these are very sturdy guitars !

It's not BS - I've seen it first hand, as have several other folk.

Try before you buy a Gordon Smith......

Got to agree I got a Left handed tele made on the basis of  how good the GS slimline les paul that I picked up off the bay and the tele is far from great.  Can't help feeling the a lad on a weeks work experience made the tele.  It got great neck apart from down in the gods where the back of the neck is a little rough, but the body to guitar is rubbish.  The body of the guitar is what looks like knotty pine.   Its almost lifeless. When I took it for a setup I got the tech to put BK's in the guitar he told me how the they had c--ked up the guitar and filled some routing.

They do some dam good ones but they do produce turkeys too! Try before you buy.

It's not just recent, either - their QC has never been that great.  When they're good they're very good, but I don't think they're very bothered if they produce a few duds.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I'm a fan of the HS config as well. Probably shown this off hundreds of times but here is my number 1 guitar- complete with holydiver in the bridge and stock fender pickup in the neck. Not a production model, just a mexican tele i attacked with a hand drill.
Mississippi Queens, Holydiver.
