Pickup Longevity question
« on: April 27, 2009, 02:03:56 PM »
I figure this is the best place to ask. i have a problem with my hands sweating alot, literally dripping when i'm playing, now, this is great as i don't need fastfret to lubricate the strings ;) but it also causes hardware and strings and pickups to rust.

as far as hardware, graphtech graphite saddles are -very- resistant to any corrosion. even the metal hardware is very solid, strings, well, elixirs do what they're supposed to.

but pickups... after a month or two i always end up with alot of rust on the polepieces and the covers if any. this doesn't seem to affect tone at all and i don't really mind how it looks as i'm used to it after all this time. but how does it affect the long term performance of a pickup? can any sweat get into the actual pickup? (i figure not, since they're wax potted so thoroughly. especially BKP's!) does rust on the polepiece affect tone after it's really built up?

it will be fine.  just do the normal stuff like wiping down after a playing session

if it gets too bad you can always replace the polepieces every few years but it would mainly be cosmetic rather than tonal
