Grover and planet waves locking machine heads

Hi guys does anyone have any experience with grover or planet waves locking machine heads? Ive got sperzel locking tuners on a few guitars but I would like some with a finer gear ratio for the tremonti SE I just bought as it has some really cr@ppy machine heads as stock. Also whats the biggest gauge string you can get through them? as I will be using it most probably for drop b so they need to take at least a .56 (preferably .59 or .60).

Grover/PW Locking machine head won't fit into Sperzel holes I don't think.

They should both fit the Tremonti SE, all you need is 10mm holes right through the headstock like you have for Sperzels (some tuners are 13/32" or 25/64", but basically that's 10mm).

You'll probably need to drill new holes for the fixing screws, either way.

No idea what the biggest string gauge would be, but the Planet Waves have built-in string cutters which struggle a bit with a 0.046", I don't know how they'd cope with 0.056" or heavier!

 The guitar has still got its cr@ppy cheap korean machine heads in atm. I was just saying ive got sperzels on other guitars so i know what they are like. and how do the planet waves and grovers compare.

Does anyone know how big the string holes on the grovers are? and what they are like to use?

I have Grovers on my Indie, they're alright. Ages ago the tech said they were stiff (i.e. bad for tuning) but I haven't changed them. I re-tune sometimes and it doesn't lose tuning (a slight advantage with the locking nut there too obviously)

But I would give them a shot, I might change to Planet Waves just because I'm a lazy ass about string cutting, etc.

Oh, and I've gone as high as 12s on them I believe cause I wanted to go to Drop B for it.

The locking grovers on my 8 string could cope with a .052 (i think, or .056), but the 0.74 had to have the hole enlarged, but that wasn't a problem- a few mins with a needle file, and it's fine.

That sounds cool, I now sperzels are a pain to enlarge bacause the locking pin is spring loaded and you can damage it with a file. anymore pro or cons for either?

i had sperzel do me a custom set with larger diameter hole.  nice company to deal with, nice price, quick service.... and i didnt have to worry about accidently doing any damage to the post like over enlarging or leaving a rough edge
