Unsung Amp heroes - Peavey Classic 30

Thought it might be nice for everyone to share their experiences with any amps they have used that maybe aren't mega popular (in the conventional sense) don't get much exposure or just plain been forgotten about.

I'm going to start the ball rolling with the Peavey Classic 30

As some of you know I have a Martamp M50 which is a JMP50 with power scaling. Its amazing! However, the odd bannd practise requires something a bit smaller (and my amp room is on the 2nd floor of our house) so I set about looking for something that basically sounds like a plexi but dirt cheap and small.

I remember reading about the classic 30 in the early 90's so did a bit of research and tried one out. Well I'll be damned give it a bit of volume, roll off the treble and don't ever ever use the boost switch and its plexi time. Can't believe how good it sounds for so little cash. Cleans are great too. Brilliant little amp that can be had for £200 to £250 on ebay.

I've heard good things about them too.

One I tried recently was the Fender Blues Deville 4x10 combo.  That was a cheap and nice clean sounding combo.  I'll be hearing/playing through the 1x12 Blues Deluxe sister version tonight, as my blues band colleague has just bought one...

The Classic 30 probably gives best "bang for buck" if you want an inexpensive valve combo that sounds good.

My major reservation with all Peavey products is that they are, by quite a considerable margin, the worst major production amp to work one.

Fortunately they do seem to be reliable, however you can end up with quite a large bill for even quite simple repairs.

- Very similar to a 1950's Fender Bassman.

- No master volume.
- Made in the Soviet Union (in a factory in Saratov).
- Huge, warm, fatt blues tone.
- Made in the Soviet Union (in a factory that used to make military aircraft).
- Cheap and simple but people are starting to clue in.
- Made in the Soviet Union (you should move to Saratov).
- Military point-to-point hardwired Soviet construction (slackers are sent to Siberia).
- Sounds thermonuclear with a pedal.
- Also, made in the Soviet Union.

Only problem that I have with my Classic 30 is the reverb - which does not work - otherwise it is built like a tank.

Only annoying feature? No standby switch - it is ON or OFF!

I've swapped the speaker for an Eminence Wizard - otherwise...

great amps.i use the delta blues model,its never let me down,regular service,stuck groove tubes in and rock out! i also have the wiggy model,again totally reliable which is more than can said for my marshal jtm 60 head,great sound but cant be trusted.

I've heard so many great things about the Peavey Classic 30.

Unfortunately it doesn't go well with TV Jones Powertron pickups for some reason.

I've read some great stuff those Sovteks too.

I recently wrote about my Engl Classic Tube 50. IMO, an unsung and unknown hero.

I remember those Peavey tweed series amps - they were great value.

My all time fave unsung amp is the Selmer T&B 50w head.

Marshall JCM 900 hi gain dual reverb.
did a few mods. never let me down even after it got a pint of water rinsed through it at a show.
sounded ok. sold it on. kind of miss it a little bit actually. it wasnt an awesome sound but it had something about it.
now my JCM800 is dead :(

Marshal VS100 head.
hybrid head. MUCH BETTER than a similar AVT. this thing stood its ground for a while. very cheap, not a terrible sound, excellent as a back up. i own one of these still but i leant it someone and its been doing the rounds since. it went from london, to reading to brighton for different bands and different people. its done a bizarre little journey since i let it out into the big world.

They were made in the USA, used to have a 210 Delta Blues which was built like a tank and sounded great, no idea why I sold it.  They are now made in China and are apparently not as well made, according to one guitar magazine I read.....

AH! the old VS100. I used to have the combo. The clean and crunch tones weren't to my taste but the 2nd overdrive channel could stun a charging rhino.

Fender Prosonic had it's problems but great amp
