Quick Question about running two amp heads
« on: April 30, 2009, 05:21:36 PM »
Would it be possible to run two amp heads of equal impedance through 1 cab running in stereo?

if the cab ran at 8ohms per side in stereo, would i need to run from the 8ohm (mono) speaker outs for each head?

Assuming you are using valve heads (!), yes you can run two heads into a stereo cab (assuming of course the speakers are adequately rated).

The stereo cab is two separate sets of speaker/s in one box.

It is always advisable with valve heads to match the output impedance of the amp to that of the load (cab).

What I would NOT advise doing is running two heads into one cab.

Yes that would be fine. Each amp sees 8 ohms impedance from each separate stereo side of your cab.

You may find you have some strange phase issues if running the amps together. Also, if running each amp separately, the two speakers that are not connected to the amp in use will slightly "damp" the speaker response of the other two. A 4x12 is designed to run with all 4 speakers running at the same time, so if 2 speakers are not working they will somewhat physically "cushion" the effect of the working two. You may notice thaht a lot, or maybe not at all.
