which pickup???? argh!
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:35:36 PM »
Hi everyone,  good forums here!

I have a quick question (the usual question everyone asks) - which pickup should I get??  I'm a bit stuck on this one.

I have a Maverick F-3 Guitar and want to replace the bridge pickup first (the stock pickups are weak).

The sound I am after is somewhere around Nightwish, Alter Bridge, 36 Crazyfists etc.  I asked Tim (very helpful guy!), who recommended the Painkiller and I have to say I was a bit surprised.  I had previously looked through the pickups and listened to clips, read descriptions etc, and the PK didn't really stand out to me at that time.

There also seams to be an ongoing debate about the PK, with some calling it the 'ultimate metal pickup' and others saying that it is 'too middy'.

what do you guys think?

Cheers,

Alex

Painkiller will work but especially for alter bridge it would be far to middy. I think the cold sweat will get you the tones you want!

CS is gonna be way, way bright if you have a typical F3

Painkillers a better choice.

Yes this forum is a great place, and forum rule number one is to follow Tim's advices, especially if they are seconded by the BKP users over there...  :)

There also seams to be an ongoing debate about the PK, with some calling it the 'ultimate metal pickup' and others saying that it is 'too middy'.

Don't really see what disturb you here, and I'd say that apart from the tones of the bands you mentionned (I don't know them well), to me the 'ultimate metal pickup', with less pronounced mids, but with a huge push that will make you smile while playing some fast rythm palm muted lines IS the Miracle Man.

I dont see how "too middy", if thats someones opinion (as it easily could be) contradicts "ultimate metal pickup".

The MM is another good choice for the styles and desired palm muted dynamics, but beware its *probably* (havent tried the combo myself, its just an educated guess) going to be quite scooped in an explorer, and very smooth sounding. DUnno if thats your thing?

I'll have to agree with that
most metal pickups are middy
and mids help to push the amp harder

MMs a good call for an F3. It wont be scooped, it will still be smooth in the midz

Personally I'd have guessed Nailbomb, but I'd always go with what Tim recommends!

Hi all,

thanks very much for all the replies!  I have decided to do as Tim suggested and get the PK Bridge - ordered it last night!!  :D

now to look forward to its arrival! if I like the sound of it I might be back to BKP for something to go in the neck of the same guitar.........

Thanks again guys,  I'll post a review one here wen it arrives and maybe record it to show people the sound etc.

cheers,

Alex
