NGD ... In about a week or so.
« on: May 02, 2009, 06:55:10 PM »
So the other day I just won on eBay what I thought was a pretty damn good deal! A Gibson 1978 The Paul, with everything original and even the original case which is quite an unusual looking one. The guy who I bought it from e-mailed me and said he was out of the UK at the moment and will ship it on wednesday, so hopefully I should have it by friday or saturday. I've read some good things about the Gibson T Top Humbuckers as well, can't wait to play it! Picked this up for £696 which I think is a pretty good buy!

As a Gibson fan I really can't wait to check this baby out.

Is that a rosewood fretboard? Its very dark.
How do you get on with those kind of frets?

Looks like a really tasty axe! That switch is in an interesting position; it would probably suit me better, as I tend to strum quite far forward and sometimes switch pickup by accident.
LOVING the Mules!

It's an ebony fretboard, with a walnut body and neck.
As for the frets I'm not sure as I'm still waiting on the guitar being delivered.

Will post my thoughts on the guitar once I've got it and played it for a bit.

Yeah that was the first thing I noticed when I saw the guitar, I think all of The Paul's were made like that, not 100% sure though.

I was thinking it was either dark RW or very aged ebony. Love the look of it.

I really enjoy rythme playing with those frets, you can really feel the board

the case is a nightmarish thing emerged from the darkest abyss of eighties, but the guitar itself is really beutiful! i nevere heard of pauls before... it's basically a les paul studio with different wood combinations, isn't it?
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

I think The Paul's are very similar to a Studio except with walnut wood and the pickup switch is in a different position. After The Paul was was discontinued they made the Firebrand which was pretty similar but with a double cutaway, then in the 90's they made the reissue, The Paul II.

The guitar is from early November '78 and I think the cases are standard for that time?

My protector case took a chip of paint off of the neck on the way back from Croydon, just a little warning.

Looks really nice, I've always liked the look of those Pauls. Would prefer the pickup switch in the usual place though, I find it really handy having it there.

Looks great
I rather like the The Paul guitar
I think they put the switch down at the bottom to keep assembly simple

Those frets should be ok - you may want them carefully dressing and the tops neatly reprofiling (that is what we did to Will's frets on his Gibbo).
Or once you have played it to death get a neat refret done

But a fair price for what may be a great fun axe
