Its all going Spinal Tap!
« on: May 04, 2009, 10:25:51 AM »
I posted here a few weeks back about a studio session with a Sax Player, a Bass Player who doesn't like 4/4 and a drummer who can only play 4/4.
Well that all went pretty well but obviously the drummer and bass player didn't quite hit it off, so the bass player who is bloody amazing to be frank has found a drummer of his liking, contacted me and Mr Sax player (who has just lost his Dad and what with me getting injured at work, things are not moving too quickly for us all) and arranged a new studio session. Great I thought someone other than me is trying to get things moving again. Plus a new drummer would be a great move in a harmonious rhythm section. So yesterday I got an email from the bass player saying he has had to cancel the studio because the new drummer has had to go for bypass surgery and I quote 'Won't be able to make it for a few weeks'! The poor sod I hope he will be ok but also burst out laughing at the Spinal Tap comedy of it.

Just got a flashback to bands I've been in in the past - always a bloody nightmare of organisation.

Good musos are hard to find though, so stick with it John.

Gulp... hope it sorts itself out Johnny.

Small thought though: "a Bass Player who doesn't like 4/4 and a drummer who can only play 4/4" - er, obviously not met him, but I'm wary of these "clever" bassists, unless you've got an over-riding artistic driving force in the band, the set seems to end up as a succession of instrumentals with bass-solos... I'd have picked the drummer

Well the bass player can go like Norman Watt Roy from the blockheads which is impressive. The 4/4 drummer talked like a good drummer on the phone but to be honest it was just a straight beat, no fills ect. The drummer who is in hospital ( not serious now I'm told!) has played with the bass player before, so I'll give it a go. Funk does give a guitar player a chance to wig out with a few solos. The bass player said he doesn't do bass solos so I'm ok there! This could be fun. I'll see if they fancy doing any James Gang stuff as that sort of sits between funk and classic rock.

Sounds good :D

It has to be said, something we "banjo-players" often overlook, a decent bass-player is worth his/her weight in gold... and a decent bass-player with a decent drummer they know and like playing with is even better...

By "decent" I mean groove, feel, knowledge of the notes... and a firm belief that "less-is-more"

The guys who are looking to play just enough notes to get the job done are usually the good ones (same thing could possibly be said about our breed, as well )

^ I did think after I'd posted it, that, to be fair to many/all musicians, the "job" that needs doing might well require far more notes than I'm usually capable of playing
