does it work as a pre-amp pedal? overdrive? i had it in my head that the Noisy Cricket was a mini-amp, does it connect straight to a speaker?

It's a half watt guitar amp (which is louder than you'd expect!). Must have cost all of about £15 in parts (probably not even that), though I reckon I could do the next one cheaper as I'd be tempted to bypass the grain and gain, leaving it a 2 knob, 1 switch job. I don't see why you couldn't use it as a pre or a boost pedal, I'll have to give it a go. As it was it was built on the radioshack general purpose pcb shown
here.
I have no facility to record sadly, also I wouldn't torture you with my playing. But there are a few Noisy Cricket clips/vids out there that give you a good idea of what it sounds like. Sounds great through my 1x12.
