Pickup Rewinds?
« on: May 06, 2009, 09:45:52 PM »
just a quick question

does tim rewind existing pickups other than BKP's? i have a set of dimarzio PAF's i like but i would like them rewound to BKP specs and have a covers added. it would a) allow me to keep pretty much the same type of pickup freq response, but with BKPvibe(tm) b) not have another set of pickups to throw in the drawer. even if costs are pretty much the same, i'd rather mod an existing pickup than have another set of spare... i don't know where to put'em anymore!

it's a HSH set so i'd also send it the middle single coil to have it match my pickups a bit more.

do you think it's worth it?

My BK's:
Black Dog8-Riff Raff8 / Black Dog7-Mule7
C-Bomb Set / Blackhawk Bridge
Holydiver Set/ BG50 Set

I believe he does vintage rewinds but I not sure you would get the best from using parts which may be of a lower spec or quality than a raw BKP a bit like picking a thoroughbred race horse then sticking Timmy Mallet on his back as jockey. My advice would be pick a set of BKPs with the tones you want and Ebay the existing pickups as they are.

Dimarzio bobbins are not compatible with BKP specs/covers.

I believe this has been stated a few times where people wanted to use the certain colours that only Dimarzio offer on Ibanez Jems/7 string Universe guitars.

IMHO It really would be a total waste of time and money as you wouldn't be getting anywhere near the BKP qualities were this even an option.

You simply have to bite the bullet and take your choice from the fine BKP range available.

Good luck.

thanks for the honest replies guys! i guess it worked in my head but you're all so totally right!

I remember reading an old article with wayne charvel saying one of the pickups van halen brought him to pot, which was made by larry dimarzio at the time, literally melted since the plastic housings couldn't cope with the heat.

worst thing is, my store is a dimarzio reseller, and people are seeing it as some kind of holy grail to tone. I wish i could afford to stock a few BKP's for some people to try, they'd go mad!

+1 to buying a fresh BKP. I've never seen such pickup quality before. I'd honestly save a rewind for a BK that I have and am not particularly satisfied, but can't afford a new one or to place it into another guitar. As for convincing others to take the right path, you might just have to stick with word of mouth until you can find some way to become a BKP dealer. Best of luck!

i'm not sure, many people see dimarzios like the ultimate pickups and won't ever change their minds... i was a seymour duncan fan, but now i've sold every SD i owned... ;)
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

it's a mahogany guitar with maple fretboard. chunky heavy piece of wood too. the paf 36th i have on it are great, if a little chunky, but i don't mind.

i'll see what i think of the black dog and mule for my 7 string once i get'em... but if it clicks, i'll probably go for a similar combo.
