any idea how they edit the vocals out of enter sandman without getting all the other instruments in the background?

Often the vocals are mixed dead centre whilst everything else is panned left or right a bit.  So what you can do is split the stereo channels apart, invert one of them and mix them down into a single mono track.  Doing this cancels out the vocal channel because one track has the inverse of the vocal to the other.

That would get you the backing track.  You'd probably have to get the vocals separately as this trickery doesn't work the other way (i.e. you can't extract just the vocals using the same method).  Some bands do release vocal only versions of their songs.  The Beastie Boys used to do that a lot.

The Extra Boy VST plugin is handy for getting the vocals out of songs to play around with.  http://www.elevayta.net/product13.htm

It's not perfect, but I find it comes in handy if I'm working on a cover of a pop & song & want to rock it up.

Wow. The different backing accentuates how good his voice actually was.
It feels like the whole experience is open rather than smoothed over/compressed (both gutiars and vox)

I am getting the black album out now.
