Replacing Inlays - Wez/Jonathan?

I will need to replace the inlays in this...



Now - assuming that I (or more to the point the guitar repaired) don't have to do new cut outs for the inlays, will I need to replace the frets at the same time?

It is an Orville By Gibson Standard btw.

what happened to the old ones?

you can buy these inlays from a few suppliers like allparts or stew-mac.

since the cavities are there the hard bit has been done for you, although i wouldnt assume the new ones will be a drop in replacement.  it easier to do inlays with frets removed but they could be worked around with patience.  not a difficult job but it is time consuming and the results may not be quite as good as they would be if it was defretted first

Even on this forum, Mike, I don't think anyone can argue with that statement! 

I wonder if there's something wrong with the glue they used on ObGs?  When I had mine it had five or six loose inlays, though none had actually fallen out.

I got them fixed by Feline, without a refret.

if he has the old ones its really simple to reglue and tidy up a bit

if he doesnt then the new inlays will be thicker and unradiused.  the quickest way to radius and polish the inlays is without frets, takes about 5-10 minutes to get them radisued and teh board ready for new frets.   its fiddlier with frets in place but still possible, it will take about 10-15 minutes per inlay

I have no idea where the old ones are - or even if they will come with the guitar! The rest of the guitar looks good, so fingers crossed! I just would rather not pay for a refret - even if this is not a bound fingerboard one!

If the guitar is a "keeper", I would change for real Pearl inlay :D


obs: err this guitar looks like have binding on fingerboard :?

You must have good eyes... I cannot see any fret binding!

its definatly bound, look at the fretboard over the body rather than next to the white background

It's definitely bound, and if it's of a certain vintage it'll have Gibson-style "nibs" of binding at the fret ends (rather than the frets extending over the binding).   Is that what you meant Mike?

It was (another) speculative buy on Yahoo Japan - intention is to tidy it up and sell it - hence don't really want to spend a fortune on it!

Any views on price/value when I have sorted it out?
