Slowhands for Frank Zappa?
« on: May 15, 2009, 11:18:42 AM »
Ok I know there's no way I will sound like Frank Zappa (technique or equipment)...

but I am a huge Zappa fan and I am building a Strat slightly influenced by him (Im working on putting an onboard booster and various preset eq settings into the guitar).

However the question is what pickups I should use.
I know Zappa used rails among many other types but as a Bare Knuckle fan I want something that can contribute to the Zappa sound and work as great pickups on their own as well.

So I'm thinking of something that can handle gain and sound quite middy. Slowhands? Any opinions?

Here's a video to Zoot Allures.

i would say yes to slowhands, but maybe without a baseplate. it obviously depends on the woods of your strat, but my strat with slowhands is very much in that ballpark.
