One of the best tools I ever bought was a decent size Pillar drill

the above is small compared to mine.
It earns it's keep in the workshop every day

Sorry but you're wrong...

The best tool we can have is a telephone to call you or Feline to get the job done properly. :)

Router, dremmel, my not-so-secret-weapon; micromeshes, my reasonably secret weapon that I dont think anyone, even people that know me in person, realises I even have, let alone use all the time: one of them torches you put on your head. Seeing things in great light, no matter the ambient = invaluable.

The power and precision of a *good* jigsaw is never to be underestimated either.

I'm a little surprised that some decent trustworthy measurement tools havent been mentioned yet. Callipers, micrometer, good steel rule - barely a day goes by I dont use one or more of these. They come up on every job, bar none. Maybe you folk just consider them implicit.

Most want: I'm just a tech, not a luthier, so I dont encounter the need to do even trivial woodwork that often, but its gotta be a drill press. Perpendicular drilling with a normal drill is a pain.

Oh, and a fret-bender.

I just cut an arc of wood and then cut a groove in that and bend the wire round it. Works great.

I cut a body out with a jigsaw.  You have to go slow and careful and I did it in stages, chopping off the excess wood afet doing a few inches of the main cut.  It's bit wastful but it can be done.

The main problem is that when you cut round a corner with a jigsaw, the blade doesn't stay vertical, so you need to keep a fair way out of the line.  Liek Wez says, it involves a lot of tidying up witha router....... which increases the chances of tear out.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.
