Played one, yes.

Loud enough to gig, yes.

Didn't care for the tone, not enough clarity for me.

it's quite easy to get a bad sound out of the Major, especially if it had the 'Texture' control added. If texture is to the left and so is the voice control then things get muddy, roll one the other way and things clear up. I've gigged mine hard every weekend for the last 2 years, it's let me down a few times (valves and mainly) but other than that it's been great. My issue with it now is that the front end drive is quite hard, but i do think that is because i tried a friends Cornell Plexi a few months ago!

I have to disagree with twinfans clarity statement, my KSM is one of the few amps that i've tried which when you add overdrive and distortion and play a full chord (with 3rds and 7ths) you can still pick out all the notes. But from my understanding there was been some bad sounding Matamps  :?

Still doesn't help sgmypod with his original question, which wasn't about the Major, lol

The Major is the same as the smaller King Street but has both 15w and 50w output sections... all comments will apply to both  8)

Low voltage and cathode biasing would get there I think.

the 15w is cathode biased, any octal tube can go in there, i preferred KT77s in mine. The 50w section in the Major comes with EL34's on fixed bias.

Don't know if this helps, but i gigged my tiny terror and it was plenty loud. The sound wasn't totally clean, had a nice bite and was loud enough for stage monitoring. My 1x12 was miked up though.

the 15w was clean (it actually showed up 18w on the scope when last at Matamp HQ), was 25-30w cranked plenty loud enough for rock tones etc. But if you want crystal cleans with bags of headroom thats when the 50w Major is useful. Last 5-6 gigs i've been on the 15w side.
