Best All Round Humbucker Set?
« on: May 17, 2009, 10:47:02 PM »
So if you had to recommend ONE set of BK humbuckers that has to do it all (regardless of music genre), what would it be?
...better yet imagine recommending a set to a session player who only has one guitar.

I think the Riff Raffs are good contenders. They for having that classic PAF sound to handle any type of jazz, rock n roll, blues, or funk, but are also hot enough to handle heavier rock and metal.

I'd have to agree with gwEm. The humbucker set that wins it all in an ash-bodied guitar may not sound as pleasant in a mahogany body.
BKP Team: Bridge MQ, Black. Bridge HD, Raw Nickel.
To Do: Bridge Nailbomb in chrome (?)

I don't think there really can be a 'best' pickup for any genre (or all genres). Tone is too subjective, rigs are too varied, and people are too idiosyncratic. Some people find low-output pickups most versatile because their amps are such that they can get all the gain they need for the heavier genres; other people find high-output pickups more versatile because they can roll off the volume or split coils (etc) to clean up the sound if they want; other people fall somewhere in the middle.
BKPs (soon): CS, TS.
Ex-BKPs: Abrax, NB, SM, PK, Mule, WP.

I don't own them, but my vote would go for the black dogs. Slightly thicker and hotter than a straight PAF, but still very classic sounding. Riff raffs on the other hand might sound a bit dry in some guitars..

It depends which end of the music spectrum you see as a priority.  If you're more of a clean to crunch to classic rock player it would have to be a PAF type.  Of the BKP range I would say Alinico IV Stormy Mondays would cover pretty much anything in any guitar.  Add a good amp and a few pedals and you'd be set.

If you're more rock and metal, with some clean and crunch thrown in, then I'm finding the Holydivers (if you set them up with a coil split) are currently working for me to cover everything.  In my band, I'm using the split tones clean for Wanted Dead Or Alive and Crazy Bitch up to the full bucker tones for Wishing Well and Crazy Train.

Too much difficult to answer that question without being subjective... especially if you want to cover all these styles !

I am tempted to say Crawler, as one of the most versatile BKP doing everything from blues to metal, and also at ease in both a Les Paul or a Strat (as said on its description).

My second thought would be Nailbomb doing it reverse way : from metal to blues.

Those are just simple ideas but the low output pickups would be the most clear an dynamic anyway.
