Opinions on this pickup swap? (Gibson/BK content!)
« on: May 20, 2009, 12:59:00 PM »
So my current guitars look like this:

Stock '94 Gibson Les Paul Studio, and a '03 Faded SG with a Nailbomb in the bridge and a never-used Kent Armstrong neck pickup...plus a new bridge and a set of graphite saddles.

I'm thinking of swapping stuff around and going for this set-up:

So both the SG pickups would go to the Les Paul, and I'd get a overwound Misissippi Queen and a single pickup scratch plate to replace them. I'd also throw on a graphite nut and Sperzel locking tuners. I'd like the Les Paul be heavy looking and heavy sounding, and the SG to be straight forward punk-rock workhorse. High gain, but a bit of a twang in there. Might also take 2 of the pots off and fill the holes so then the toggle switch will just be a kill!

What are your opinions? Think it's a good move?

I think trying the SG pickups in the LP and going from there would be a good move.

Whats wrong with the naibomb?

Nothing wrong with it at all! I'm just thinking it would sound even bigger in the Les Paul and the SG could benefit from a P-90. I love simple guitars, and that's about as simple as you can get!

Well why not break out the soldering iron, y'know, instead of photoshop, and find out ;)

The SG is my main guitar and I really don't want to have to take it apart to find out what the LP would sound like, I'm more interested in what the MQ would sound like in the SG.

get a queen, but for the neck position
and a riff raff + coil split for the bridge
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Thanks for the suggestion but I don't want a neck pickup!

dunno then, never played the MQ and its my humble opinion that "Punk tone" is an oxymoron *shrug*

What's your SG made of? I found the MQ to sound great in alder, especially when overwound.
BKP Team: Bridge MQ, Black. Bridge HD, Raw Nickel.
To Do: Bridge Nailbomb in chrome (?)

Mahogany.

You should be careful about the overwind then, because a pig-90 wind could be too dark, but something moderate would be better.

the riff raff is very "twangy" for a humbucker
and you can split coils when you want to
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

I was going to ask you on punktastic but couldn't be bothered signing in!

But, where did you get the black knobs and switch surround on the SG from?
SG-X/Over wound Rebel Yell
Blue SG 61 Reissue/Cold Sweat
Egnater Mod 50
Matamp 4x12
