15 inch speakers
« on: May 21, 2009, 06:52:53 PM »
Thinking of trying a 15 inch speaker set up with my Peavey Classic 50 - any advice/comments/suggestions?
Thanks
David

that can be a really nice sounding setup, but bear in mind that some 15" speakers can sound a little scooped in the mids due to the extra bass end of a 15 - you also, surprisingly, get pretty much the same treble response.

I seem to remember a Jenson 15" speaker getting a good review in a UK Guitar mag during recent years.

I have wanted to try a 15" with a pair or quad of 10".

check out the eminence website:

they make a few 15"ers and are excellent value.

I've played plenty of great sounding amps with 15" speakers, including Tweed and brown Tolex Fender Pro amps, and BF Vibroverbs.

Of the less vintage end of things, the 1 x 15 Peavey Delta blues is also is a great sounding amp, as it the old WEM Dominator.

15" speakers are generally favoured by rockabilly and pedal steel players for their extended bottom end, although of course Ritchie Blackmore did quite well with his 4 x 15 cabs!

I have a home-hacked 2x15" Marshall bass cab (200W) which I made into a (2x15") + (2x8") speaker cab. I LOVE it! Adds a nice bass thump to the sound, but also gives a bit more interest on the highs (they're just as present as in standard 12" setups).

I use this cab with a standard 4x12 cab

I had a Wem Dominator in for repair and it had a greenback Celestion G15M - sounded great.

I use a 1x15 Fane with my Hiwatt.Sounds fantastic. More balls then a 1x12 and it breaks up earlier then a 4x12. So you can push the amp into the tone zone with out going deaf.
