I go Marr. Simply because Squire was amazing, but he was more influenced than he was influential. We're still seeing the footprints of Marr all over current 'superstar' guitarists like John Frusciante, and a ton of American rock acts.
The large print giveth, and the small print taketh away...

should I be ashamed that us youngins don't know who these people are?

Not at all but you should get your self a copy of 'The Stone Roses,' it's a great album.

That is the best advice I've ever heard, fuggin awesome album.

I never used to like the Smiths but now I'm quite into them........ must be getting old.  Also the line "I was looking for a job, then I found a job, and heaven knows I'm miserable now" is the best line in the known universe.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I voted for John Squire. I think he is a brilliant guitarist. I like Johnny Marr too but I was really into the roses when the baggy scene came out. I didn't like all of the music from that era though.
The full length album version of I am the resurrection is a masterpiece of songwriting and musicianship from all of them. Some of his over dubs and ideas as it all builds up are brilliant, as is the production, which I believe was him too.
The Seahorses album a few years ago is a great example of what he can do too.
Its a shame he doesn't want to play anymore. He is into his painting more these days. He is really good at that too!

Seen him a few times at track days also in his old (but absolutely stunning) BMW DTM car.
When you´re racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just pies.

Can't get a fag paper between them in terms of ability/creativity, both massively important in their genre.  However, I can't forgive Squire for getting (an alleged) big coke habit and pretending to be re-making Led Zep 2 on the Roses second album. Johnny Mar is the winner for my money.

Now then, I think Mark Day formerly of Happy Mondays is a really underrated guitarist.  What do the rest of you think?
