Both great in different ways - Johnny Marr for his visionary use of tone, effects and odd chords to drive the Smiths and John Squire for his Zep meets pop meets slide pyrotechnics.  No doubt others will disagree, but two of my fave guitarists.

I don't really know either of them that well, both obviously very talented but musically out of my "comfort zone".

I voted Marr because I'm more familiar with some of his stuff.  That's not a very good reason, but I can't take back the vote.
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

I don't feel qualified to be able to say one way or the other. Sure I know some of their work but not enough to be able to make any judgement. For me comparing artists is like comparing the merits of different colours.

As a young housecat gorwing up in a barn in Nowheresville, Iowa, I had heard about the Smiths and I wanted so badly to like them.

Then I heard them.

I think my immediate reaction was to rush to put on some Muddy Waters or anything that didn't involve Mancunians' self-consiously oh-so witty songs about their oh-so ambiguous sexuality.

Funny I had the same reaction and I'm from Manchester.  I hate the Smiths and have never been able to understand why anybody likes them.  Perhaps if they would have had a different singer.....

The Stone Roses however were great.   :D

Not at all but you should get your self a copy of 'The Stone Roses,' it's a great album.

I voted for Johnny Marr, even though I hate Morrissey, but my real answer would be "Vini Reilly" because he's better than either of them. :)

I voted for John Squire. I think he is a brilliant guitarist. I like Johnny Marr too but I was really into the roses when the baggy scene came out. I didn't like all of the music from that era though.
The full length album version of I am the resurrection is a masterpiece of songwriting and musicianship from all of them. Some of his over dubs and ideas as it all builds up are brilliant, as is the production, which I believe was him too.
The Seahorses album a few years ago is a great example of what he can do too.
Its a shame he doesn't want to play anymore. He is into his painting more these days. He is really good at that too!

Ah, Stone Roses and Smiths.  Two bands ruined by having cr@p vocalists.  ;)

I'd go with Squire, although Marr did some nice work.

Never heard of Vini Reilly.
