Swapping PUs in LP
« on: May 23, 2009, 06:57:03 PM »
Hi,

I recently acquired a 2007 Gibson Les Paul Standard. It's Dirty Fingers in the bridge position and DiMarzio PAF Pro in the neck position.

I'm thinking about swapping the pickups for an Emerald bridge and a Black Dog neck. What do you think about this configuration and what kind of tone would you expect?

Sounds like a cool combination. I like the Black Dog neck a lot in my Epiphone Les Paul, especially as it is very nice clean and also keeps body when you turn down the volume on overdrive, yet it stays very clear.

From what I hear about Emeralds, they seem very cool for LPs!

The reason I'm considering the Emerald/bridge, Black Dog/neck combination is that (according to Time) they're the equivalent to Gibson's 498T and 490R sitting in one of the LP Custom editions. I really like the sound of that. Paired with a JMP-1 and EL34 100/100 power amp produces a growling/snarlig/grainy/not smooth/biting/"I'm gonna rip you head off"-kinda sound  :o

So I'm wondering if I will get a similar result (or close to) by installing Emerald/Black Dog in my LP Standard (2007, so it's chambered)?

I'm playing 80s inspired metal/heavy rock. This is it:

Actually I haven't tried the guitar with my amp yet, so I can't really comment on the sound. I have only played the guitar through my Pod Xt, so it's hard to tell what it's like for real. However, the neck PU sounds very "closed".

Oh yeah, you did indeed suggest Cold Sweat, and I actually followed your advice

ATM I have this setup:
Gibson Explorer with Painkillers
Gibson LP Classic with Warpigs
Gibson LP Classic Antique with Mules
Gibson LP Classic Custom with Cold Sweat

So, I'm wondering what the Emerald/Black Dog configuration will bring to the table?
