Which pickup for a 1 pickup Tele?
« on: October 23, 2005, 01:30:50 PM »
Hey guys.

I have a cheap Gould Tele that, despite from being a horrid Green colour and sounding like cr@p, plays well and sounds ok acoustically.

I'm contemplating buying a new scratchplate for it that has no neck pickup slot, and to just replace the bridge pickup with something better.

I play alot of Classic Rock and am also in a few other bands that are only just the 'Rock' side of 'Indie Rock' :D

I need something versatile, but that also has a nice powerful sound to it.

Thanx for any recommendations.

Craig

I'd think about the Boss set, they've got a typical tele brang, but some serious balls too!

Thanx for the suggestion HJM :)

I think I'll probably just replace the bridge pickup and forget about the neck pickup. To be honest, I'm not the biggest fan of a Tele neck pickup anyway :)

I have a Piledriver and mini-mule (well ok it is a firebird, but my mini-mule sounds just like it!), set in one of my tele's and it works great.  I also put the 4-way switch on to give series/parallel in combination.

This set up gives you a great neck pickup sound too, and it takes up a lot less space than a humbucker.
So many pickups, so little time

I like the idea of the Piledriver myself, but I'm not sure it's right for what i want from this guitar. That's why I'm asking the experts

If it helps, the guitar has a Maple neck and Fingerboard with a Poplar body. Does this make any difference to anyones pickup suggestions?

Hi Brow, when I had asked Tim about pickups for a Tele, I asked about getting the Roy Buchanan sound, and he suggested the boss set.  This was to go in a maple neck, ash body Tele.  He said it is a hot 50's sound, he gave it the name boss as Springsteen plays a 50's Tele.

Cheers

Thanx for the post Phil :)

When I was originally going to change both pups on my Tele, Tim suggested a set of Country Boys. But I'm not sure if just 1 of those in the bridge would be versatile enough?

I've taken onboard the suggestions for a Boss bridge, and am also considering a Brown Sugar bridge too :)

If there's any Tele pups for trial at Music Live, I'll give them a go and see what I like :)

Hi Craig, I never heard the Country Boy or many other Tele pickups.  I have heard the Brown Sugar and Piledriver.  I was thinking of the Yardbirds, but Tim mentioned the Boss set.

I have a 62 Tele, and the sound will be pretty much the same as the Country Boy I think (it has a really good sound currently - it has a 57 ash body and 62 rosewood neck, with real 62 pickups and 57 pots).

At LGS there were only 2 Tele's I think.  I know there was one with a Stormy Monday neck and I think a Brown Sugar bridge.  I want to get a set for my other Tele and I would like to hear them, but with BK, if they are not what you want you can always change them later.

Cheers

At the minute I'm thinking between a Boss or a Brown Sugar bridge. I'll see how I get on with any test Teles that may be at Music Live and then go from there :)

I mentioned this on the phone to Tim earlier and he mentioned a Boss pickup :)

I guess I'll give them a go at Music Live and see how I like them :)
