Gibson sg r61' metal bridge pickup
« on: May 25, 2009, 04:36:58 PM »
Hello dear BKP user's ;).

I was drooling all over the website and only heard good reviews about those pickups and I'm looking for some changes on my 61' reissue sg.

I have nothing against the c57 in neck its smooth and soft but the bridge pickup isn't enough powerful even played through an high gain amp.

I'm looking for something wild with that chunky and juicy distorted sound at high gain levels but capable of soft clean sounds and also harsh crunchy sounds. Something like the ol gibson 500t but with a more open tone and better clean sounds if we sum up.

Im aware I am not the first one that asked about such a pickup swap, but all the topics I read and samples i listened to didnt give me an answer.

The nailbomb seems to suit my requests but the rebell yell seems a good partner aswell.  Can't really decide.  :)

If someone stops by, thanks for the help.

The 500t is a ceramic pickup as I recall so you might want to go for a Cold Sweat or Painkiller Pickup.

Nailbomb isn't the best choice for an all-mahagony guitar as it gets really dark (experienced that in my V recently)

You should also consider a c-bomb (a ceramic nailbomb). Hot AV pickups in dark guitars could darken things excessively and make you an unhappy consumer.
BKP Team: Bridge MQ, Black. Bridge HD, Raw Nickel.
To Do: Bridge Nailbomb in chrome (?)

you definitely want a ceramic model
if you want a huge compressed tone more like the 500t, get a ceramic warpig
if you want the 500t voicing, but without the compression, brighter and cleaner on the mids, get a painkiller
if you want a more balanced open tone, but with a lot of crunch and bite and retaining a nice clean tone, then get a cold sweat
the miracle man has similar low mids to the 500t too, but it's way cleaner on the overall midrange and more focused

the 500t is a very distorted (muddy) sounding  pickup, so a BKP with equivalent output won't give you the same amount of gain on same settings, if that's what your looking for, so if you want that kind of grind on the mids, go extreme (ceramic warpig)
Riff Raff, Mules, Black Dog, VHII's, Cold Sweat

Warpig might be too extreme no ?  So a cold sweat is a good start if I want to keep a decent clean and crunch sound.  I want to keep the spirit of that reissue but with more power on the bridge pickup without loosing that crunchy raging sound in the mids.  Sort of steroids sg but capable of something else than extreme metal tones ^^.

edit : i read your topic on several pickups youre using and the cold sweat is acording your opinion tighter than the 500t, got a more open sound, stays grainy and clear at same time, seems i found a winner. Possibly an overwound version to get a bit more power since the sg's body is thin and bursting mids ?

i've got an SG61 loaded with a cold sweat set... i didn't have too many expectations but it turned to be one of my best - if not the best! - guitar/pickup matching!

it's an absolutely great combo, and makes the stock c57 set sound like a broken trumpet in comparison... ;)
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

Listened to a lot of samples including yours.  Cold sweat seems really full of tone and character, vintage with modern raw power, but might lack a bit of tightness in bass for me. Can that be solved with overwounding ?

^^ me think I will never buy this set  :haha:

Eric said it all about how to compare the BKP to the 500T, but you seem being somewhere in between a PK and a CS, with maybe a touch of the Pig inside  That said +

=

Ceramic Nailbomb imho (even if I'm not sure you could say the CS lacks any tightness in the bass)

Tim described the C-Bomb as an hotter CS and here you have a topic explaining pretty well how does the C-Bomb interact with the rest of the modern range :

i wouldn't call the CS loose in any way... regarding the overwinding option i have no idea!
