New band, new pickup?.....(high gain stuff)
« on: May 26, 2009, 08:39:52 PM »
So yeah, i had a practice with a new band last night. Really enjoyed it after having not played in a band for about 8 months i think.

I use a C-pig at the moment, and i don't think it's the best thing for a two guitar band. It did the massive thick sound i wanted  for my last band where i was the only guitarist, but i'm thinking that i might need to take it down a tad

I'll be playing mainly rhythm with a bit of lead here and there. Clarity is an issue as always (but i don't really need to worry about that with BKP's :D)

It's going in my 61 SG, and the other guitarist uses a EMG 85

Music style is pretty techy hardcore. Tuning is D standard

I'm thinking a Miracle Man, a C-Bomb or a Cold Sweat (although i'm thinking that i might want something slighty hotter than the CS)

Any help appreciated!

I'd say a calibrated set of Painkillers would be well worth considering for "techy hardcore"

I love my RiffRaff in the SG for teh brootalz very very much. I think it's also perfect for a two guns setup, it's bright and cuts it and is not overly compressed.

Don't worry about the CS not being able to "keep up" with the other pickups - it has plenty of power, probably more than a NB (though I've no experience of the C-Bomb).

I think a Cold Sweat would be a good option.  It's lot bit lighter than you C-Pig but still heavy and tight enough for metal by all accounts.  It will give you a thinner tone which will balance better with the EMG guy.

Depends if you want to go tight and clear or a bit more organic?  If so, you might want to try a Nailbomb?

The C-bomb is basically an overwound CS according to Tim.

So if there's enough power in a CS, then they'll be more than enough in a C-bomb i guess?

Also, no one has even mentioned the MM?!

Painkillers are focused and precise with fabulous dynamic response and shed loads of bite - but never harsh - and if you roll back the volume pot they clean up surprisingly well given their spec - far from being a one trick pony
