NAD!
« on: May 28, 2009, 09:03:35 PM »
Well, after Parcelfarce didn't turn up yesterday (so much for their 24hr service!), i got this a day after i expected, but it's here nonetheless. An eBay purchase, at a pretty good price i think, so i'm a happy chappy now :)

Can you tell what it is yet?

Nearly there....

Here it comes :)

Err.... that's not what's on the box!

Of course, i've bought another Laney Klipp :) After being really impressed with the performance of the other one that i bought off Dave, I decided to get another based on their simplicity and sound. This second amp is stock (unlike the other), so theres a normal channel (a non master volume clean channel), and the Klipp channel, which has a really nice overdriven fuzzy sound too it. Each channel has a 'top' switch, which is just cuts the bottom and boosts the top end- at low volumes it's too bright and thin, but I haven't had a chance to turn it up yet, so it'll probably fill out as the volume increases.

It's got Brimar 12AX7's and a 1xMullard, 1xBrimar and 2xJJ EL34s in the power section (who matches output valves anyway? (actually i do, but these'll do for now))

Combining both amps together sounds pretty good, even running both through a stereo open backed 2x12. I'll probably add in a master volume soon so i can play with the amp at a little more manageable level.

So no JCM800KK, but at least i've now got an appropriately sized box to ship my JCM900 in! Anyone want to buy it? :)

And finally, a shot of the girls:

Guts will be posted later, just been playing with the clean channels on each amp together.... holy mackerel they sound good clean! Can't wait to get some proper single coils to get rocking with it!

Johnny: You can buy the box for £400, and you'll get a free amp with it! Now that's a bargain ;)

I was preparing myself for the awful tribals on the front of a 800KK then scrolled down and was pleasantly surprised.
not often you see a klipp around, let alone 2 on top of each other
very nice

I'm gonna try and do some recordings next week :) These amps are so underrated i feel; early 70s (only produced between '69 and '73), partridge transformers, p2p wiring with turretboards, and great sounds!

Gut shots for those interested :) (click for bigger pictures)

As you can see, all the electrolytics have been replaced, which is good (might do something about the massive radial capacitor in the preamp section though)... 30 years would have dried the originals out somewhat!

That's good news. It cost me at least £45 to re-cap each of my old Selmers, so if it's already done that is a result !

And, yes, if any electrolytics in the pre-amp are still original, they are well worth replacing.

After playing with the amp for a bit, I prefer the clean channel to the Klipp channel- the Klipp channel doesn't have enough definition to it. An odd point to note about the Klipp channel, is that it actually mixes the original signal in with the distorted, so when you turn the Klipp section up, you can still hear a non-distorted signal behind it. This can be fixed by removing one wire in the circuit, however.

I installed a master volume as well, initially trying out a cross-line MV, which is post-PI, and uses phase cancellation to attenuate the signal- it adds more distortion (probably not the circuit, but rather it being post-PI), and there is potentially an issue with it interfering with the bias of the output valves, so i removed it and opted for a regular pre-PI MV. The amp sounds nice and balanced all through the range, which is quite a pleasant surprise :)

I think that i'll be fiddling with the Klipp channel for a while, to see if i can get a nicer sound out of it, this amp is to be the Blues amp, so the fuzziness of the Klipp isn't right for it.
