Moving to England

So i've resigned to my fate- there are no teaching jobs in Scotland. But there are bleeding hundreds in Engerland. So I want to move to get me a job. But being the ignorant Scot I am, I know nothing about 'down south'.

Where in the country is nice, with nice people who don't want to stab people with funny accents? I'll literally move anywhere I can find a job, and the aforementioned stabbing avoidance must be adhered to. I'm not a massive fan of the big cities so I'l happy being rural.

Recommend me a place to move and spend the rest of my life. Lowish house prices would be nice, and I don't want stabbed!

Your fear of stabbing rules out London, Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool. Unfortunately probably rules out Bristol too, which is my favourite of the southern cities. House prices aren't the lowest on the M4 corridor, but there are plenty of teaching jobs and low stabbing probability. Oxford's OK but not cheap and crawling with students and tourists.

I can recommend the north-east.  We tend to get on better with you northern folk better than we do with those southern folk :)  I live in Durham.  That's got lots of villages & towns dotted around the county & (from where I live in north Durham) it's only about 25mins to Newcastle or Sunderland.

West Midlands? I'd like to live there someday.

Usually people get nicer the more north you go, or less south in your direction.

I'd avoid London, since your daily rude:friendly human encounter ratio will fly in the wrong direction.

I liked Birmingham a lot when I lived there, but I've never actually lived full time in another English city/town. Not a clue on what's good on the job front though.

I hope you find a job and a good place to go. I live in Sussex which is a wonderful place I think but like many places there is good and bad-my bit is pretty good otherwise I'd have gone years ago.I think cities anywhere these days are pretty  grotty and I'd look for a nice market town. Don't disregard the South, we are not all unfriendly self centred money mad p*ssheads that we are often portrayed as being.

I live on the south coast (Southampton). This is not a bad area to live, the New Forest is close at hand, although living in a more rural area is considered a luxury down here and therefore costs money. Bournmouth and Winchester are ok too. I don't subscibe to football rivalry, but I don't like Portsmouth that much, although I'm sure it has it's nice bits.

London is only 70 miles away, which is good for day trips.

I'm not sure on the northern mortality rate, but I'm not aware of any particular hatred. Of course if may just be that all northerners are dead before they get down this far...  :)

Oh, and the climate is a little warmer too.

I've lived all along the south, and my favourite place has definately been Plymouth (and the whole of Devon and Cornwall actually). The whole pace of life is just a bit slower, and rather more "people-orientated". I found people really friendly. The scenery and coastline is outstanding, and of course there's the surfing, and the mild winters etc, etc.

All of these places sound fantastic guys, thanks a lot. I'll draw up a big list and find some jobs in the area.

nfe- yeah i'm from glasgow, think i saw your hairy self wandering about the city centre on sunday. As for Birmingham, I hate the place! Sorry to brummies on the board, spent a lot of time there with my girlfriend and really didn't get on with the place. Hence my desire for somewhere smaller and slightly rural.

As with any city, York's got a fair share of rough areas of it's own tho... Tang Hall springs to mind. My gf's friend got bricked in the face by a bunch of chavs one day :( But yeah in general it's a nice city.

North Yorkshire is nice if you like rural as some guys have said. Richmond, Pickering, Whitby etc. North York Moors is absolutely gorgeous. Anywhere in Dales is nice but probably too rural unless you want Last of Summer Wine kinda life!

Around my area, Otley and Ilkley are pretty nice as well as lots of small towns/villages around Leeds. Anywhere that ends in ---ley tend to be nice lol.

Milton Keynes private schools aren't too bad (not personal experience) and the MK house prices are actually reasonable considering the area.

South East is a good option. Hertfordshire is fairly un-stabby, apart from Luton of course.
