Best BKPs for my 335? Your recommendations please.
« on: June 03, 2009, 07:59:06 AM »
Hey guys,

I am getting a 335 style guitar custom made and am wondering which BKPs to get in it.  I have two Gibson LPs with Rebel Yells which I really love but wonder about something else for my 335 (maybe).

Hear my music here: www.myspace.com/blackriverdrive

I guess I want something open and woody but also something that I can palm mute on a bit too (obviously not ridiculous ultra metal chugga chugga on a 335 but still).  The rebel yell might actually be the best thing but I wondered about something with perhaps just a touch MORE bite since the guitar doesn't have the natural fullness of the les pauls.

Any suggestions guys?

I was listening to your music and I'm thinking maybe a set of mississippi queens? Otherwise, the rebel yells should work as well.

Got some of those actually - not nearly bitey enough for the heavier stuff but yes, would be lovely for strumming away.  I found them frustrating in my LPs in that they just don't have that humbucker grunt for heavier stuff.  God they're a great clean or low gain pickup though.

That's a very interesting question....and a nice guitar, congrat' !  8)

So you say the RY hasn't enough bite...

Well...don't know if this will help...as I have quite no idea  ...but maybe it would be worth considering the lower output pickups. Have you ever considered the Riff Raff or the Black Dog ?

Some Gibson 335's had Dirty Fingers in! Which would lead to the suggestion of a CS if you are after a bit more bite

The RYs would be fine, VERY bitey and woody, they are my favourites so far (I've tried MQ, RY and Crawler) - the MQs were what I was referring to.  I didn't make it clear!

Be careful. A 335 with Dirty Fingers or the like is classified as a "weapon of mass destruction".

So then you might get arrested for loading a 335 with a CS set...
I have an overwound MQ that handles heavy stuff pretty well, it's a bit darker but I have no complaints. Thought of overwinding a set of Rebel Yells slightly?

Stormy Monday will cover everything you've stated and I've played dead clean all the way to old school metal with 'em in PhilKing's 335.

i like the suggestion of d'n'l... but for bite i would suggest a riff raff - in the bridge at least

So that saying, and with the suggestion above of d'n L, it should be really worth considering the low output range like those SM and RR, I also suggested.

The CS is a totally different approach but very interesting, from what has been explained here.

 I don't think he has to worry about a potential global destruction...or not that much. If anything it would stay a moderate one, or at least nothing nuclear

It would also depends on what you call a "weapon of mass destruction", everything being relative...
As for me I would have imagine quite another animal with that one-of-a-kind-definition  :P

Any thoughts to a VHII?  Clean up superbly, and can handle most rock and/or metal requirements.......no shortage of bite.  Wasn't one of EVH's earliest modded pups stolen from a 335?

Tell that to George W. Bush.

Last time I plugged my old 335 with Dirty Fingers in my home was surrounded and I was accused of being a terrorist.

Riff Raffs.

Listening to your music and your needs this would fit well and Riff Raffs are close to what the sixties ES335's had originally.

I have a Riffraff in the bridge and a Mule in the neck of my 335 , playing 70s and 80s rock . Also , consider raw nickel covers , they look cool and age quickly .
