I think it definitely makes sense to out source for these one off's.

What's the difference really between them hiring, training someone and buying all the hardware and dedicating factory floor space to it and getting these experts to do it? The end result will no doubt be the same.

Hell, they can probably do it better, it's what they specialise in.

I'm sure PRS want to keep their overheads down, and aren't these guy's very local to PRS anyway?

PRS have been working with the Pearl Works inlay guys for many years.  I think they do, or have done, a lot of the work on the regular bird inlays and also the private stock stuff too.

I would say they're more of a 'business partner' than a 'supplier'.

I find these dragon guitars beautiful pieces of artwork, but I would never buy one myself and even less be seen at a gig with one hanging around my neck  :D

when I think PRS I think pretty guitars, these just look awfully tacky in my eyes, may as well be a slice of cheese instead of dragons

I believe the birds are made by own PRS CNC :)
They're not exactly 'custom', it's done regularly...

I will never understand why they bother making such guitars, they look absolutely disgusting.

LOL, indeed.
Although, judging from the amount of time the doubleneck dragon has been in PMT in Brum, I'd say yu might have a hard time selling.

It was always Paul's dream to have a guitar with a dragon on it. It's become their thing.

So ugly it would make an onion cry.

Nice workmanship, but it uglier than what my grandma has on her shelves.
Advice worth what you just paid for it.

I like the art work, which is very impressive....but wouldn't play it. That's too much for me.  PDT_025
