I am trying to get help on setting the optimum pup height on a Les Paul - I have Mules.

Any advice?

I use 2mm between string and polepiece when fretted at the last fret as a starting point.  Then adjust slightly to taste...

Same here.

I also make sure all the pole-pieces are flush with the cover first.

When I'm adjusting:

Nearer the strings for: more output, fatter, thicker, warmer
Further from the strings for: less output, clearer, brighter

The bass & treble sides don't have to be the same height (I tend to have the bass side slightly lower).

Personally, I'm more interested in getting the bridge pickup spot on, so I tend to do the bridge first, then balance the neck for volume (and for a tasty middle position).

I only adjust pole-pieces if it's absolutely necessary (a particular string is too loud or quiet) - not happened on BKPs for me :D

Oh yeah - I spent weeks fiddling originally, every day ... nowadays, I get what I think is reasonable and live with it for a few weeks, then review it and possibly change it, then live with it again...
