Will be in London next weekend ... Good guitar shops?
« on: June 16, 2009, 11:47:08 AM »
Well I am traveling down to London on the 28th of June to see one of my favourite guitarists of all time Mr. B.B. King at Wembley. I have the next day free in London before my flight home at night and would love to check out some guitar stores.

Many people have recommended Denmark Street so I think thats where I will go but from what I gather there are many stores on Denmark Street so just looking for some shops along that way that you guys would recommend.

i don't live in london, but have been a couple of times on holiday, and checked out as many guitar shops as i could... I imagine denmark street is probably the best plan if you only have one day- there are better shops in the surrounding area, but if you only have one day you'd likely only manage to make it to one shop (because of all the travelling involved), so it's probably a better idea to go to denmark street where you have several shops right next to each other...

if you head to denmark street, you've got the several shops on denmark street, plus another couple on charing cross road, plus ivor maraints just off the near end (near relative to denmark street) of oxford street. When I was there last, there was still sound control under the Virgin Megastore at the near end of oxford street and the soho soundhouse on charing cross road right next to denmark street, but SC went bust (and SC owned soho soundhouse too, i think), I'm not sure what happened to those two stores as I haven't been to London since.

EDIT: as I said, I'm not local to London or anything, so there may be other, better, lesser-known shops of which I'm not aware. :) Depends on what type of stuff you're after too- I thought that Denmark street was pretty darn expensive (I wouldn't really want to buy anything there in most of the shops- it didn't help that one of the shops quoted me double the RRP for an effects pedal I was trying  :x ), but had a really good selection of guitars and effects pedals- but the amp selection wasn't great. So if you're mainly planning on trying amps, it might be worth going further afield, even if it does mean you can only make it to one shop.

That's what I figured. I thought there was a chance that maybe one or other had been taken over (like some of the other SCs were)...  but I guess not. :)

nah. neither of those places were that good. not much in the way of interesting stock. I was never too keen on the staff at either place really.
Denmark Street is a good place to start. buying anything from down there though is a sure fire way to loose money quickly!
I bought an EL34 duet from music ground down there and it cost me WAY more than i would have to order them online from wherever. Vintage & Rare & Wunjo are always worth a visit. though neither seem to have the standard of instruments they used to.

yeah, the staff in soho soundhouse especially wasn't that great when i was there. The manager anyway, i overheard him (when i was in the try-out room) giving one of the assistants a tongue-lashing for letting "some random kid off the street" (me) try out expensive guitars. I wasn't too pleased. What didn't help is that before I'd gone to the shop, I'd emailed them to see if they had the guitar I wanted to try, and had been assured that I would be welcome to try what I wanted. It's stuff like that which, when a company goes bust, makes you think, "serves them right" rather than feel any sympathy. Though I felt bad for the assistant dude, he looked like the long-suffering type...

i agree about V&R and wunjo, they were the pick of the shops (in terms of nice staff at least) when i was last in denmark street.

Been looking at some of the Denmark Street shops online and I think I'll probably check out Wunjo and Vintage & Rare. Looking on the Vintage & Rare website, they have some beautiful guitars, do they let you try out any of their instruments in store? Would love to play some of the instruments that they have listed on their website.

Yeah, I've even had V&R forcing guitars into my hands with a "give it a go, it plays really well..." (some extremely expensive and old fender) - I was quite shocked when they first did it to me

It helped when I was buying a reso though - I had no qualms at all about putting it down and trying the expensive Nationals to see how it squared up to them (it was better! so I bought it...)

they put something like a s/h 1990 fender strat with a roller nut in my hands. EDIT: though to be fair I think i got to try it through a vintage marshall. Was trying a bunch of pedals, that's probably why.
