New amp advice
« on: June 21, 2009, 10:25:56 AM »
After playing all these years through my Marshall JCM2000 DSL 401 combo I have decided I am going to upgrade and get a half stack. I gig on a regular basis and the Marshall combo has served me well there and it has also served me well when jamming at home.

I am looking for some amp recommendations from you guys, I'm looking for something that would sound good at home volume and screams when cranked up for gigs. I play mainly classic rock and blues. I was thinking either Marshall or Orange would do the trick but I am willing to consider any other brands too.

I can't speak for the Orion, although I'd love to try one out sometime.

I have an Orange Rockerverb 50 and Orange 4x12 and love it, really nice crunchy sound, has a vintage vibe and can do modern as well. Definately worth spending some time playing with Orange gear, might not be your thing in the end, but they are good amps. I use a Hotplate with it, yes it alters your tone some when you increase the attenuation, but you can still get some good sound and still hear the TV.

Can't speak for Marshall as I've not experience of them.

I recently bought a Diezel VH4 and this thing is AMAZING at low volume, ok no amp is at it's best unless you put some power into it, but the Diezels work well at home volumes. The new schmidt might be worth a look, it's 15/30w, so that might fit the bill. The Einstein comes in 50/100 versions, that might also be worthy of a look. Diezel ain't cheap though. :(

Most everyone is going to recommend the amps they already own.

If you want a great, versatile 2 channel amp head, check out a Rivera Knucklehead. K55 should be perfect for what you want to do and they sound amazing.

I'm selling my Laney VH100R half stack if you're interested?

I was playing on a metal festival, and before our gig was comparing amps of other bands a bit.

The best classic rock tones came from a Rivera combo and a Marshall JVM. I was really surprised about the Marshall. I was expecting it to be high gain/thin, but no, it was thick and crunchy as hell, plus had real nice cleans. Maybe I should get me one of those 4ch/100W heads while the Pound is still so low.

I think very highly of the Laney Lionheart top. It's cheap in the UK, but sounds like an amp worth a lot more.
I also dig all kinds of Marshalls and, to a lesser extent though, Peaveys. There are a lot of good amps there. It's not entirely clear, if you still like the DSLs basic sound, or want something different. Also, what budget did you want to spend?

Thanks for all the advice guys. Really appreciate it!

At the moment I'm looking at the Marshall JVM410h, they have a couple in stock at my local store so will probably go down and check it out sometime this week.

Yup, that always happens, but it's still worth seeing what others are using :)
