Which pickup for Alder body?
« on: June 28, 2009, 03:39:30 AM »
Hi, this is my first post. My name is Dave, and I was wondering which BKP would sound good in a strat-style Alder body guitar?
In the bridge I'm looking for a tight, crunchy sound that's focused on the low-mids that keeps clarity(can hear every note in a chord) with high gain, that doesn't flub out and turn to mush. Warm, also, with a chug, with energy*Just a word I'm throwing out there for this analogy*.
In the neck, I'm looking for a clear sound that tracks very well for solos, and crystal clear clean rhythms, warm leads. Again, tight, and with clarity.

I'm looking for humbuckers, I play metal, and I'm a fan of Death, Atheist, Sepultura and Jason Becker if that helps.

I'm looking at Alnico V's, but if Ceramics would sound better for what I want to do, I'll look at those too.
Thanks for anyone that can help.

Miracle Man should give you a Sepultura-type sound easily.
Current BKPs: Miracle Man, Nailbomb, Juggernaut, VHII
Past BKPS: Holy Diver, Trilogy Suite, Sinner, Black Dog

Holy Diver bridge ticks all your boxes & it sounds fantastic in alder.

The Holy Diver neck is very bright & clear, but might not be warm enough for soloing (have a listen to my neck shootout clips in Players).  I'd probably go for Cold Sweat, although I really like the VHII neck as a match for high gain bridge models too...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

True to form, 3 replies and 3 different pickups suggested...

Welcome to the forum.

For my two pence, Nailbombs are great for high gain, but are quite middy and warm.  I'm not a metal monster, but they do high gain soloing very well indeed.  For hi-fi sounding riffing you might want to look elsewhere.  But for an extremely versatile all rounder, I doubt you'll get better than the Nailbomb.

Mark.

nailbombs are awesome pickups, maybe my favourites (no, erase that "maybe"), but your description is HOLY DIVER. period.
and they should sound perfect in an alder guitar.
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

I don't know how I let it elude me earlier (I was tired), but your needs also do fit holydiver for sure. What's worse is that I have one and I still let it by. It's quite warm, with a great low-mid growl, and definitely clear and extremely responsive. Again, it's quite warm, so I've managed to maximize the experience by removing the tone pots from the guitar it's in.

id say nailbomb for all of those artists besides Sepultura, if youre only looking into playing metal, Id say get the miracle man since its also capable of that becker/ gilbert style tone.........theres also the coldsweat and painkillers as good options as well.........probably a cold sweat would suit best though

Thanks for all the replies, and I have another more noob question, if I get, say black covers, for these humbuckers, will that "weaken" the magnetic field/power in anyway? I hear that's why people take them off. Thanks.

People say that they can hear the difference - but then apparently different colour straps can change the tone of your guitar too...

Tim compensates for the cover in the manufacturing process.

+1
Tim pays close attention to everything when he makes the pickups, get the covers if you want.
