Surprised by Rebel Yell DC resistance value. what's yours?
« on: July 04, 2009, 02:25:26 PM »
Hey guys, you may remember I was asking for a ballsier Mule. Well even though I got a lot of great advice I had to go with what Tim recommended and that's Rebel Yells.

I ordered them with raw nickel covers and I've just installed them in my Les Paul = cool
(gonna give the new strings some time to settle before I try them out).

But I'm a bit surprised by what it says in the documentation.
DC resistance: 10.3k 4.2k
...considering the the website says 14.45k 8.3k.

So what does this mean?

That's a pretty substantial difference. Play them first, if things don't sound up to par, shoot Tim an email, but it could just be a bit of an error. Can you measure the DCR yourself?

They sound good and are definitely hotter than my Mules.

However I'm still surprised by how low the values are. What do DC Resistances actually represent?

very strange... i can even imagine tim underwinding your RYs to meet the tone requirements you gave him in your mail, but 4.2 seems really too low!
DCR is loosely related with pickup "hotness", but not necessairly with perceived output and with heaviness of tone. but 4.2 is still to low even for a single coil!
Mule, MQ, Stockholm, CS, RY, MM, PK, ANB, CNB, AWP, CWP, PiG90...

too many? ;)

yea the lowest I've had is a 5k for a strat pickup.

i'm the first to panic about silly things like wrong DCR values, but when MY pickups are not involved i'm much wiser...
if they sound "definitely hotter" than the mules then they presumably are! ;)

anyway something's wrong in your description of the RYs.

they sound GREAT, not good! :)

A 20.6k RY just might be a bit much...

Maybe it's meant to be 10.3k and 14.2k, and you have an overwound neck pickup?

Coil offset ;) and the RY apparently has one vintage coil and one modern. Maybe they just have a new guy in and he measured the wrong cables

I've seen 2.3k in a strat pup... an old one.

Maybe the specs have changed? Though I doubt it with it being a signature pickup.

do you not think they might just have missed the 1 off the (1)4.2k?? ;)

it would make a lot more sense if it was 14 rather than 4!

The ticket that accompanied my set of Rebel Yells stated Bridge 14.4K and Neck 8.3K.

Get a Digital Volt Meter and check the resistance of the windings to be sure.

+1 - This is the one I use - only £6.99 from Maplins: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=37279
When I change pickups I test every step with it - nothing worse than spending an hour or so dismantling/reassembling a guitar to find you've c--ked up a solder joint inside.
