NGD: Feline!
« on: July 09, 2009, 03:35:50 PM »
Oh YES, got my Feline custom today! :D

The story started when I was at Feline 8 months or so ago for some work on another guitar.  While I was there I played some of his guitars.  One of them, a white super-strat/RG style design caught my attention.

I didn't really like some of the features (control positioning, ibanez trem, colour), but the neck was probably the nicest neck without "Jackson" on the headstock that I've ever played (FWIW I'm a big Jackson fan, so that's intended as a huge compliment).  Lovely comfortable shape, so slick & fast all the way up, huge jumbo frets (immaculately installed, as always).  Just a great, GREAT neck.

Unfortunately someone else had put down a deposit on the guitar, so I left the shop disappointed but relieved (credit card could've done without the hit).

Fortunately, that customer later decided he wanted different inlays & ordered a new neck to go on the body.  So after a brief discussion about spec/pricing, we agreed that Feline would build a new body to go on the spare neck & make into a custom guitar for me! :)

Every little detail I wanted, Feline was able to accomodate (I went down there & personally positioned the controls exactly where I wanted).  I was even able to pay in installments.

The end result looks, feels & sounds absolutely fantastic.  Pics will follow later (Feline took some nice ones while I was there).  I am very very happy & proud to finally own a guitar with "Feline" on the headstock :)

  Camera's not in the house.  We'll have to wait for Feline himself to post the ones he took this morning.

However, I just remembered that he PM'd me a few the other day while he was assembling it after paint:

Interesting volume control location!  What's the reasoning behind that?

To get it out of the way of my flailing hand :)

Those who have seen me play may have noticed that I splay the 3 fingers of my right hand that aren't holding the pick (middle/ring/pinky) quite wide.  When I'm doing aggressive palm muted riffs that means my little finger clanks into a volume control located in the standard Fender/Ibanez etc position.  I find myself accidentally rolling off the volume from repeatedly hitting it, then suddenly the sound goes really thin as I've almost rolled the volume completely down.

I find a lot of off the shelf guitars have the volume positioned way too far forward & close to the bridge pickup for my playing comfort - it's a real show-stopper for me.

Ideally the volume control should be no further forward than level with the back edge of the pickup bezel & a good 1½" down from it.

The problem with doing this on a Floyd-equipped guitar is that it ends up under where the trem arm hangs in a normal playing position so you can't get at it easily.

On this guitar, it's so far back so that I can reach over the trem arm & "roll" it with the blade of my hand.

The 3-way toggle is just far enough back/down that I don't knock it but not so far as to be under the trem arm & awkward to operate quickly.

Have a look at the other guitars in my armoury - very few of them have a volume pot in the "standard" position (note the blocked hole on the Charvels & some of the Jacksons).

That's an interesting point, never really thought about it!  :)

I suppose, without thinking, I would've said it's theoretically a good thing to have the volume control within easy reach, but in fact on my SGs, LP Jrs, Teles etc they're actually miles away!

On Strats, I definitely do that thing of accidentally turning down the volume.  I saw someone (I forget who) giving the volume control a quick "tap" with his little finger every few seconds, to make sure it was still on 10, so I've tried to develop that as a habit.
