custom printed guitar picks
« on: July 13, 2009, 09:00:54 PM »
i've been having a look at some of these places that print picks with your custom designs for you. in fact, its quite affordable, and i was thinking it might be a cool promo for my band. but if i'm to make gwEm guitar picks it should be something i would actually play. so i was wondering if anyone has an experience with these things? normally i take 0.88mm dunlop tortex picks, and would like something similar.

i have a couple of wezv picks which seem to be a nice enough material, but a bit thin.

one can get dunlop to do custom printed tortex, but you need to do at least 800 of them, which is far too many for me, needless to say.

i got mine here

http://www.steveclayton.com/

i just wanted to do it as a trial so did not want to order 800 either.  i should have though as i am quickly getting through the 200 i did order

they have loads of options as well as a virtual plectrum design tool

i think i went for 0.8 white delrin to get a nice contrast with my logo

delivery was pretty quick too

thanks alot for the info wez! its funny, but i instantly felt the 0.08mm difference in thickness. maybe delrlin has a different stiffness. feels quite nice to the touch though - is delrin the same as tortex?

i think the delrin is the same as the tortex, the green delrin is 0.88 and looks just like tortex - my plec of choice for a long time

i always take wikipedia with a pinch of salt, however it has this to say about tortex:

Quote
Tortex

Tortex is a brand created by Jim Dunlop, but tortex picks are made out of a plastic called delrin that was created by DuPont. Dunlop's Tortex and Delrex picks are both made of delrin, but have different surface coatings. It has been influential in replacing tortoiseshell guitar picks after an international ban was placed on the trade of tortoiseshell in the late 1970s. Tortex is registered trademark of Dunlop Manufacturing, Inc.

Tortex picks are used by many guitar players. Tortex is one of the most popular materials for guitar picks[citation needed]. It imitates the texture of a tortoise shell. It has a grippy feel, so players don't drop the pick while playing.

the surface of your white picks feels like a new dunlop tortex pick. i might order some non-custom clayton ones to see what they're like. it would be nice if they did a pack with one each of their material types - some of them look quite exciting.

erm my delrin yngwie pick is nothing like tortex, it's very smooth and shiny while my tortex picks have more of a subtle matt finish with no shine

ultex or lexan is what you want ;)

and heres the picks of the delrin pics that website makes

http://www.steveclayton.com/delrin.html

not shiny at all, quite satiny like tortex!!

the 200 delrin plecs i ordered from them are not shiny either... although i do think the tortex maybe slightly more satiny than my  0.8 white delrin plecs

i am not saying delrin cant be shiny - what i am saying is that the plecs sold by that website as 0.88 delrin (only available in green) are very similar to the green 0.88 dunlop tortex plectrum... and as gwem says, the white 0.8 delrin plecs i ordered from them do feel quite like a tortex plec.  i think maybe a tortex is slightly more 'dusty' feeling when new - but there isnt much in it

my guess is that it cant be called tortex unless it comes direct from dunlop

yngwie uses the 2mm ones, but he gets his in white, picture doesn't show off the shine that well, it's like a mirror that needs a clean

I bought a bag (300 IIRC) of Delrin picks from Steve Clayton a few years ago & am still using them today, very happy.

Delrin starts of with quite a rough matte finish, but after a few days of use is smooths out to a more satin type finish.  For me, the pick wears down far enough to discard before it gets shiny or I start losing my grip on it.  I like Clayton's delrin a lot & will order more if I ever deplete the current bag enough.  The few Dunlop Tortexes I've had seemed to keep that rough feel a lot longer....

I use (and have always used) 0.88mm nylon JD picks (the grey ones) - they just have the best tone and feel for me.

The pricing on that website is good - think I'll be getting some HTH picks ordered.

I got Red Bear to make me some custom picks and they put my name on them - you don't need to order many but it isn't the sort of thing you want to give away at gigs (though I have given about 15 away!).
So many pickups, so little time

The last batch of picks I got made I ordered from My Badges.  I found that the print comes off them very quickly with use.  I've placed an order on the Steve Clayton site to see what they're like  8)

The picks I ordered from Clayton on Tuesday last week arrive this morning :)  Quick quick delivery from the US.  The print looks good.  Hopefully it'll last more than a few minutes in my sweaty hands.
