4 guitars to stuff with bare knuckle goodness
« on: July 17, 2009, 06:57:50 AM »
G'day everyone, first time poster here, with a mammoth question to ask.
I have 4, 7 string guitars that need some bare knuckle loving and have come here to seek some advice. They will be tuned to "B" and "A".

The 4 guitars are,

2x Ibanez rg 7620s, one 1998 model with the standard Di Marzio blazes or (new 7s as I have read elsewhere), and one 1999 model, with Seymour Duncan invaders in the bridge and neck position. Basswood bodies and maple necks.

1x Ibanez K7, 2001 model, (I dont play or like Korn, but this is a beautiful guitar to play and look at), with the standard Di Marzio paf pros in the bridge and neck position. Mahogany body with maple neck.

1x BC Rich N7 seies Warlock, (not sure of date manufacture), with those dreaded bloody BC Rich pickups that sound like arse! Agathis body (I think), with maple neck.

So, this is what I am thinking of doing, I am going to purchase these little bar-stewards,
Bridge position:
                        1x Painkiller
                        1x Miracle man
                        1x C-Pig
                        1x Nailbomb

Now this is where I need your help, which pickup do I put in what guitar?
To make things easier, I have had a go myself, please let me know what your suggestions would be,
Legend:
            98 rg 7620 = A          Painkiller = 1
            99 rg 7620 = B      Miracle man = 2
                         K7 = C                C-Pig = 3
            BC Rich N7 = D          Nailbomb = 4

So my suggestion would be,

A2
B3
C1
D4

Any suggestions would be muchly appreciated, thanks everyone.  8)

Hello & welcome to the forum.

If it was me, I'd go for:

A4 / B3 (or vice versa)
C2
D1

Why?  Because I've had best results with NB in alder or basswood.  I suspect that it's highly popular amongst Ibanez users for that reason.  Miracle Man sounds best in Mahogany.  Don't have much experience with Agathis (understand it to be a poor man's mahogany), but the ones I've tried seemed a little "blurry" in the low end & could use a does of ceramic tightness, hence the PK.

Alternately I guess you could do:
A4/B1 (or vice versa)
C2
D3

Also, I'd be tempted to fit an A-pig into your pickup choices, perhaps in place of the NB, but that's just because I've tried it & liked it with low tunings...

JMHO, YMMV etc...
BKPs: HD, MM, NB, PK, CS, Ab (b&n); Am (b only); VHII, Tril (n only); IT, Slow, Sult (m&n)

the miracle man is known for working pretty well in basswood and even maple too

and agathis sounds nothing like mahogany
I'd say it sounds just like... plywood
I had a Bc Rich Platinum Pro (quite expensive model) and it had an awful plywood body
it still sounded better than some agathis LTD's I've played

You're right - I was actually thinking of Nato, got the two confused.  I have zero experience of Agathis, so just ignore that part of my post....

Hi, and welcome.

I would put the PK in the agathis (it needs some serious cutting through, in my experience), the nailbomb in the mahogany (NBs work best in LPs, I think, so this is closest) and toss a coin between the basswoods (MMs and CPigs have both worked really well in pretty much anything for me).

I would also use these as STARTING POINTS ONLY.

Put every pickup in every guitar.

Dont be lazy.

Just do it.

You never know how its going to work out. If you have the pickups and you have the guitars its up to YOU to try it out and TELL US which combinations worked in what ways!

That would be good, it's true.  But could be a problem if you're planning to get them in all different colours and finishes to match the guitars.  :P
BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
BKPs I Had:  RY+Abraxas, Crawlers, BD+SM

He didnt say anything about matching finishes :P

Besides, manys the time I've got a pickup with a certain finish for one guitar and put it in one it didnt suit because it sounded better.
