Steel Panther have been talked about on the forum quite a few time  :)
Check out some of the live stuff, their singer has a great voice.

Genuis. I think this is what Justin Darkness would like to have achieved but he got a bit confused.

they are excellant live

Saw them in London last month - possibly the most fun I've had at a gig in 20 years

oh no... :(
Dave_mc raises a good point when he says that musically he loves what they do but the lyrics are **pretty banal/offensive/ just so rude that once the amusing novelty wears off you kind of wish they had alternate versions of the songs with more traditional lyrics

** my interpretation - think Dave just said they were awful

In context I like the lyrics , because I can have a laugh at all the bands I grew up with without losing any affection for them and the playing and PRODUCTION on the Feel The Steel album is top notch.....much better than the previous versions of these songs that they released previously

I also saw two members of the band as Atomic Punks  (Van Halen tribute band) and they were better than seeing Van Halen IMO

Justin played on their album and played with them live for two songs (incl cover of Believe In Thing Called Love)

yeah, that's exactly what i mean. :( Just add in the fact that finally a good new hair metal band comes around, and they spoil it with the lyrics.

great band. heard about them not long ago. but i'm not really a fan of bands who try to be funny. i look to separate places for my comedy and my music. i agree, great band, but the lyrics ruin it.

^isnt the whole point that the lyrics are "bad"/funny? They wouldnt be any good if they were a serious band!

I want to hate it

Its hair metal, which is balls

And its comedy metal, which is pointless (so much metal is comedy without even trying)

And its juvenile shitee

But I lol'd.

There's another reason why I don't like them, mr feline. it gives extra ammo to those who think hair metal is a joke genre, that you can only play or enjoy it if you're being "ironic".

I'm pretty much with Dave on this one.... the lyrics are meant as a joke, but it doesn't stop them being actually quite offensive, which makes me quite uncomfortable.   Imagine if they were being racist rather than just horribly sexist and a bit homophobic, they wouldn't get away with it.  "I was only joking" isn't good enough.

Sorry to be all puritanical about it.

I can understand the Darkness comparison, but I always thought The Darkness were right on the edge of parody without quite going over - they were obviously aware of the stupid/funny aspects of glam metal, but they also loved it and were still part of the tradition.  Whereas Steel Panther are totally taking the piss.   They even wear wigs, FFS (I know many "real" metal musicians wear wigs, but they pretend they don't and we pretend we haven't noticed....)

You almost wonder if they're a bit contemptuous of the music they play, rather than actually enjoying it.

That I can believe.  EVH is a trainwreck live, but Russ Parrish is note-perfect.  He used to play in a really good Rush tribute band as well.

BKPs I've Got:  RR, BKP-91, ITs, VHII, CS set, Emeralds
